Dick,

I decided to take my own advice and digital multimeter and test the three conductor plug coming from the dash. As it turns out, the solid brown was the hot lead, not the brown with white stripe. I'm sure the factory simply 'screwed up' when they wired it.

Bottom line, ALWAYS verify that your boat is wired the way it's supposed to be before you make any electrical wiring changes.
