The best insight I can give you since you'll be coming down for the week ends is to find a boat ramp on the Brunswick county side of the shoals. We have East facing beaches in New Hanover county (Wilmington), and we have South facing beaches in Brunswick county (Southport). Knowing where to put in may make a difference when you're coming down for a day or two. If the wind is blowing out of the South/Southwest fish Wrightsville beach and the winds will be offshore. If the wind is blowing out of the North put in at Southport or Long Beach and the winds will be offshore maybe saving the day for you. There are a few local websites that will give you a lot of insight in planing a trip; weather,whats biting, etc. Send me a private message if you're interested and I'll give them to you.
