You can't really see it in this picture but there is a cut out on the bottom front of the holder that the reel seat from a spinning rod or the finger grip on a freshwater casting rod fits in to. There is also a cut out on the top of the holder that your casting reel fits over that keeps the rod from rotating while in the holder. Here's a better picture of the top cut out:



It's very solid when in use and very easy to remove the rod when you have a fish on...just lift up and the entire top part of the holder pivots up out of it's cradle. Overall, I think this is a great system and it works really well for my type of fishing.
