Well, first guess would be that you have a short in the pump. But I would first check the wiring at the pump. These could be loose and why it is shorting out and not running in auto mode. If that doesnt work, pull the pump and with the wires above the water, turn the switch on. If the breaker pops again, you have a short in the wiring that supplies the pump and or the switch itself. If not, then using a test light complete the circuit and see if that pops the breaker. If it does then the breaker is weak. If not then the pump is most likely the issue so I would try changing it out.
