MolarBoater hit the nail on the head. On a flat, calm lake you could get by with a shorter shaft, but who boats only in flat, calm water? Nothing scares a fish like a trolling motor sucking in air every time a wave rocks the boat. Get the longer shaft and save yourself some heartache when the wind picks up. Good luck.
