nymart, I thought about you this weekend when a friend had a sililar problem with his Honda. Everything sounded like a fuel problem and he replaced filters etc and then it was recommended by the dealer to remonve the cowl. As crazy as that sounded it worked. What he had was similar to vapor lock they said and Honda was aware and did have a repair...under warranty was my understanding. Im not sure if you have had the repair or if you have it sheduled but just for kicks you may try that just to see. Although if you have the same problem with your kicker guess not. I agree with you, they should be a bit more durable than that. Good luck!
