As far as options go, if you plan on going swimming, etc, the swim platform is very handy. If you want some shade the Bimini Top is a good option. You may also want to look into space for more side mounted rod holders.

For fishing and boating, a combo FF/GPS is handy to have especially on the south shore where all the creeks look the same - especially at nite - and the FF can help keep you out of the shallow in the Great South Bay.

If your interested in a Bimini Top - I have a Triumph Factory (Red) Model available from my old boat (since the dealer didn't want it in my trade-in) that I'll take offers on. It's in great shape.

Maybe we'll catch up someday - I'm on the North or South Shores almost every weekend over the summer.

Kevin: I just purchased a 2002 170 Sportsman model and was reading these posts in the forum. I am new to boating and purchased this to use in Long Island and up in Maine with my grandkids. I am picking the boat up next week and trailering it to Maine where I will try my hand at launching from the trailer and firing up the 50 hp Honda engine. I hope to get out to tour the islands there and do a little fishing.
What do you recommend keeping on the boat at all times?
How much rope and chain should I have?
It has a depth finder (but it did not work when we snapped it into the carriage).
I spoke to Dick at Merritt and he suggested a factory swim platform because of the shape of the transom on this model.
I also asked him about a bimini top - he suggested that I get a single piece model locally because the factory one does not "ship well" and would be less costly. My model is tiller driven - will the bimini top interfere with the engine when stored?
Do you still have your red factory model?
Are they easy to install or should I have a dealer do it?
I am probably asking "rookie questions" but that is what I am. Any feedback you can give to me would be appreciated.
thanks, Joe
