Prior to '03 the 170's were rated for 90 hp. My '02 is rated for 90 although I have a 70hp two stroke. When I bought mine I was told there was a problem with the boat "chine walking" at full speed with a 90 hp. Why the manufacturer down graded the rating I'm not sure. In Feb of '02 when I bought mine the four strokes were really beginning to take off and I suppose the additional weight of a 90 hp four stroke had ramifications other than just"chine walk". The 70 hp is adequat for pulling tubes and kids sking. When it comes to adults sking It's a bit inadequat. I start on two and drop one.At my age the 3 or 4 days of pain afterwards far out weighs the 10 or 15 minutes of fun sking.
