Thanks, guys. Sounds like exactly what's happening. I had called Motorguide and the techie told me that while there was something in the motor that would cut off if it got too hot but it wouldn't reset itself that quickly. As far as my second question is concerned I was in a marine hardware store and the salesman sold me a spray can of "Corrosion Block" which apparently a lot of people use to stop corrosion. On the way out another customer stopped me to tell me that he used it all over his boat and it works!
