Patching large holes.

I have a 3" x 8" hole in my consule from a poorly mounted vhf radio, could this be done with a smaller welding kit and welding rod, unfortunately there is only one dealer in the southern california area and I was told it was going to cost me $250.00 and I cant even get an appointment for a month. The proscess looks simple so I would rather do it myself. Anybody have any ideas? Or know of anybody else in the southern California area that can take care of this for me now not a month from now?

Where is the hole located? I think I would get a piece of StarBoard, maybe 1/4 - 3/8 thick, and cut it about an inch bigger in each dimmension, round the corners, radius the edges, and use a few countersunk flat head Stainless Steel screws to hold it in place. It would look like a factory pannel.
You might even consider buying an aftermarket marine access port with a snap in or hinged cover that is larger than your existing hole. These covers don't look out of place on any boat.

I Used A Piece Of Starboard And Cut It To The Size Of The Radio Opening And Then Mounted It To The Console . By Doing This I Could Loosen A Few Screws And Have Access To The Whole Radio And The Area Inside The Console Where The Wiring Is Located

I checked with the factory for you on this and here is their response:

"To fill a hole that size it would require welding in a piece of Roplene to fill the hole, rather than just filling it in with welding material. Without a fairly expensive investment in the proper equipment to weld in a piece of material the best bet is to contact the dealer and if you can't get scheduled in to get the repair done, then request a piece of Roplene that is a bit oversized for the hole and screw it in as a cover. For smaller repairs using a heat gun and some welding rod works great but for repairs of this size there is some definite training and equipment that needs to be involved."

Another idea was: "He might want to put an access plate or a glove box to cover it up."
