Wow! What a day on the river! I launched from Leesylvania at 7:00 a.m., just before daylight. Water temp was 46.0 and tide was dead low. The river was like glass, not a ripple. A quick run up to the Occoquan River where I dropped the gill net for Gizzard Shad that I use for catfish bait. While I'm waiting for the gill net to do its thing, I eased into the main channel to see what's biting. First drop of the Silver Buddy jig and a small Yellow Perch nailed it. For the next half hour it was non-stop. In the boat and released where 15 Yellow Perch, 3 Largemouth Bass, and 1 Striped Bass.

Pulled the gill net up to find 6 large Gizzard Shad, plenty for bait. Decided to try to catch some larger Perch for dinner so I went back to the deeper water of the channel. I fished for another hour and caught 8 nice Perch and 2 nice Crappie...that'll make a good meal. (See attached picture)

I ran 20 minutes down river for Catfish and managed 4 Blue's between 8 and 15 lbs and another Striper. This one was fresh from the ocean as he still had some sea lice attached...I guess the annual spawning migration is starting. A few warmer days and the fishing will explode...what a great time to be on the river.

Everythng right now is C&R..I think May 16 is the official open season...of course that's after the big gals have spawned and left the river. That's OK with me though, I don't keep them anyway. Now Crappie and Perch, that's another story...I love fresh Crappie fillet sandwiches!

I am way up on the Susq River and Flats, check out these maps and dates. I do keep a couple stripers whenever possible and grill them with lemon, cajun seasoning, and salt & pepper to taste.
Maryland's Striped Bass Recreational Regulation Map 3 . Your making me hungry now. I love perch, but have never had crappie before, boy that sandwich sounds goooood!!!
