    17' Questions

    Hey everyone,
Just sold my old boat this morning which was step one of my Triumph ownership journey. I have a couple of questions for you. I have settled on the 17' hull. I live in Central Florida and I think it is the best bet for my truck to be able to pull around the state. I am still undecided between the CC and the DC. I will be doing a combination of fishing in the St. Johns, going on the lake chains, and trying to learn the flats out around Titusville. I will also be taking friends out for rides and out to Ponce Inlet. Maybe even light offshore on a good day. I am 6'3". How is the legroom on the DC? I have been in a CC but not DC. I like the stand up driving that a CC offers, but the DC seems to offer more flexibility between fishing and riding. Do you DC owners feel that the floorplan has enough room for moving around and fishing? What would you say are the benefits of a DC over a CC? I only ask because all of my boats have been CC's and I know the pluses and minuses there.

Also I have seen a 17 for sale with a 90 repower. Does a 90 on the back void the warranty for transfer purposes?

Thanks ahead of time for your time and opinions.

    Dean,
I have a 2010 170DC which I bought 3 month ago from Rivercraft in Panama City FL. Although I am not a fisherman my friends that do fish liked the layout .....though the CC is probably better arranged for fishing.

I am only 5'9" so the fit behind the wheel is good for me. The seat moves back and forth so you probably can find a comfortable spot. However, the only complaint you may have is that the seat is too low. Someone else on the forum replaced the stand pole with a longer one because, like you, he was tall.

Having 4 seats mid-boat is better for my use. The weight is better centered than only having 1-2-3 in the center and 2 on the stern.

I am trying to obtain the grab bars for the consoles so that no one grabs the plastic windshield and snaps them off!

    Best of luck.

    Greg

Dean I have the DC 17' and don't really see any advantage over the CC for fishing . The biggest advantage to me is the wife likes to sit down when were underway..As far as leg room I couldn't really say, I'm built closer to the ground than you. I'm in SW Fl. but was born in your neck of the woods and I can tell you that either the CC or DC 170 will make you a happy man for the kind of fishing we have in Fl. Good luck .. Maby someone else will help you on any other info..By the way if you get the Triump join us, you'll be glad you did....Great info and people...James

    Dean,

I have a 170 CC and have not been in the DC but I can attest to the fact that with two people fishing in the boat, it is nice to having the flexibility of each person being able to move fore and aft up and down each side of the boat without running into each other. I too like the stand-up sttering of the CC especially in unfamiliar waters.

Good luck with the Triumph purchase. Great, tough, low maintenance boats!

    6'2" and slightly over 200LBS

I have a DC 17 and am 6'2" and slightly over 200LBS ManoWar. I have a DC that I have extended my seat up two inches. I also have a fishing seat up front and I have two poles for it. One for bass and the other when I'm in the rough stuff, I have a lot of weight on the back of my boat with duel batteries, and a 75/4 banger, I installed tabs that plain me out in 3 sec without squatting in water when I floor it. My fishing buddies work this boat well. One in the front and one in the back, I swing the passenger seat sideways and that were I fish from.... little tight but when I’m 60 I can still shove it into the garage and I know it and I will still be fishing. Check out my pics on this site .

I don't know what you want to spend, but the dealer I purchased my Triumph from Watersports of Central Florida Boat Dealer - Wakeboarding, Ski, Fishing, Sport, Skiffs, & Flats Boats has a 2009 170cc with a 70hp 2 stroke Yamaha on sale. The last price I saw was less than $12,000 with trailer. The nice thing about the 2009 model is the updated center console. I own a 2008 with the same motor and am quite happy with it.

    Good luck.

    Dean,
I have to agree with Broth. For fishing nothing beats a center console especially when you're fighting a fish that wants to take you around the boat a few times where the side consoles get in your way. Also if you have a friend on board and a double hookup, both can walk around a lot easier. I've lived and fished all over central Florida on both the Atlantic and Gulf sides for over 40 years. I've owned both side console and center console boats and for me, a center console wins hands down.

    Dean,

I own a 2001 17' CC with a 70 Suzuki 4 stroke. I love it for fishing and tubing. My last boat was a dual console bass boat which was great in the rivers and lakes but, not as dry a ride as the CC is in rough water. The dual console is a little more conveinent for joy riding but, the CC is better for fishing. I believe anyone will agree you are trading a little of both worlds with either boat but, you will love which ever one you chose. If you fish with two people go with the CC if you will be joy riding with more friends pick the DC. The 17' was the tallest boat that I could park under my house if I ever step up to a 215CC I will have to build a separate garage. Hope this helps.

I have fish and worked on (most recent jebsr50's 170 DC that is in a major haul out and re-work phase) and see advantages to both. Matter of fact, I would be almost half tempted to get the DC myself and remove the port side console to make it into a true side console, and just have both the Capt and Co Angler just set on the quite large rear casting deck. Something to consider at your height if you do get the DC.

First off though, buy the boat with the majority of its intended use as the design goal. Meaning that if you plan on fishing 60% of the time or more, then get the hull that best suits those fishing needs and leave the joy riding members (like kids whom seem to loose interest) to just adapt when they are aboard.

One consideration to take into mind though is plowing through Brush and Mangrove creeks to get back where the big dogs play that the lower consoles of DC will come in handy. Some of the places Jim and I have gone on his, Osceola was the last guy to fish in them and it was more like Vietnam Jungle Warfare than fishing This is why we are in the process of getting rods and gear down below the gunwales and loosing as much weight (draft) as possible for these needs.

Matter of fact, we may even have a enough space left over in the rear casting desk to store a small chain saw (many need a snake weapon too) for some access to some real serious back water locations

Good thing the GPS software was just updated so we can find our way back out of some those spots we have both scouted
and see by looking at Goggle Earth and Bing satellite views. Music from the movie "Deliverance" seems to come to mind also and I sure hope them dudes are long gone by now Ha-Ha....
