The dome is mounted Directly to the plate on the rubber bushings provided with the unit. I comptemplated mounting the raised mount on the bracket but chose not to after Noticing my storage was only 6 inches higher that the dome without the raised bracket. It works fine as I have made a couple of night trips with it and also used it for bad weather (IE storms and fog). It picks up even the little plastic can buoys that are not very big at all. The unit works very well, However because it takes get used to on how to adjust the controls I would suggest taking it out and playing with it on a few day trips to see how it works. Very small items that show on the close in range views do not tend to show up well on the long range veiws. As far as JRC I talked with a guy at the factory a few weeks ago about another unit (jrc1800) and he did not say anything about them discontinuing anything.

JRC is discontinuing the low end model models 1000, 1500 & 1800s
