Question 2001 186, Should I or should I not?

This is my first post on this site. I have looked at this forum for the past couple of years. Have been partial to Logic/Triumph for a long time.
Now the questions:

1) I am going to look at a 2001 186 Cool Bay. I see that it was only made for one year. Was there a problem? I don't mind making minor fixes but I don't want a major project.

2) I will be using the boat in the Indian River in Florida mostly but want the option of going into the ocean on a good day. Will this boat do it?

3) I read that there are a lot of posts about water coming in to the bilge area. Is this a problem and is it serious?

4) The boat has a 115 Mercury on it. Is this enough power? There are approximately 300 hours on the unit and he is asking $6500.00. Is this a fair price for this boat? I am restricted on the budget as I have just been retired early on disability and don't know yet what the income will be (didn't expect this). This seemed to me to be a good value. NADA says around $9000.00. Is there a resale value in these boats if I am able to move up later to a bigger model in the future??

5) What is the true length of this model? I have seen 18', 18.6' and 19'. Does anyone know for sure?

Sorry about all the questions but you guys seem to have the answers.

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Bob,

The cool bay is a name only. The 186 was made but the name was changed to 190.

The boat length on both of these models = 18'6"

The 186 is a good river boat, and handles good in ocean, especially on a calm day. Works good on most semi-rough days. The rough ones, well, you might wanna think about staying in the river.

Make certain that you have a tube of 'Rule' sealant. You will need it at one time or another to seal up something on these boats. On my earlier email to you, I could not think of the name for the sealant.

Price wise, guys, need some input from the rest of you. I'm happy with what I have, so I have not been shopping in a long time.

Bob, I believe you can't go wrong with the plastic boats.

Bob, I've had a 2001 Logic 186 for 3 1/2 years and the only time I have noticed that water was in the bilge area was when I would sit still for a while, like camping overnight. Otherwise, when I pulled the drain plugs, nothing came out.

As for power I have a 115 Suzuki and it does good for me. I just look at it this way, I can't go as fast as some boats but they can't go where I can go. The 186 has an 11 inch draft. I just make sure the motor doesn't 'bump' anything.

I use my boat for crusin', Geocaching, camping and scuba diving. I'm just now trying out fishin'. Oh My! Did I just use the 'F' word??

I take my boat mostly on lakes but have had it in the ocean a few times. It's not pretty like NCAngler or OspreyVic's boats but it works for me.

You might want to have someone check out the motor just to be sure on it.

My boat was "demo'd a couple of years before I got it "new" from the dealer with a new 2002 motor.

Astro, I would disagree with you. You have a good looking and functional boat. You have mastered towing it to many many places, and she has performed as you have asked. She has been your diving platform and your sleeping platform. If you let her, she just might take her where that fishing rod and reel can be used. What else can anyone ask of their boat?

Astro,
I'm with you Vic. It's a good thing she does not know how to acssess the internet, your boat would be hurt and emotionally scared for life.

1) PM illogic-AL, he owned one. I've got the 2002.
2) The boat can take more seas than I can. Anything over 3' and I head for protected water.
3) Water enters the bildge through the grey deck panels on my boat. The 2001 may not have drain holes under those panels to allow the deck water to drain to the bilge - I'm not sure. Either way, Molerboater has a thread about sealing up these panels. I don't worry about it since I trailer my boat. I would be concerned, however, if the boat were to be sliped.
4) 115 is fine, I've got a 130 that is weighs more than your 115. Forget about NADA. Compare to what other similar boats sell for with similar power, then decide. I would sell my 2002 with Honda 130 for $10K, but not actively looking to sell. So 6,500 sounds good - all other things equal. Hours are good, maintentance is better - low hours is bad.
5) 18'6"
