I have been tossing arround the idea of a swim ladder but since I am such a tinny little feller tipping the scales at 340lbs 6' 1" and the wife is bigger (not, lol she will kill me)...will it hold my big butt getting out of the water I am just afraid that I will pull the screws out of the hull. I have been looking at a stainless over the side model that folds out of the way when not in use......either that or get a vhf radio to call air support from the coast gaurd for a heavy lift

The reason I went with the swim platform that I have is because we tried two over the side models...a stainless one with a three inch standoff and a rope model with plastic steps. Both had the convenience of being able to stow out of the way when not in use but both also had a tendency to push up under the boat when trying to climb aboard. If I'm not mistaken, I believe mine is rated for 500lbs. I know that when I put in on I climbed up on it and jumped up and down to make sure it was sturdy. It didn't budge. Just my observations.

One other thing to consider: If you fish or boat alone can you access the ladder from outside the boat, in the water, in order to get back in. It may be a matter of life or death!

BTW, if you decide to go with the over the side model, shoot me a PM and I'll send you one...almost new! That way it can clutter up your garage instead of mine when you decide to go with the mounted platform.

I needed to install a ladder to get back on my 2002 Bass 170 when in the watter and ended up consulting a mechanical engineer. After he suggested that I should not drill any holes in the hull I agreed. The solution was a piece of hardwood (mohagony) that was mounted on the right side with the two bolts that hold on the rear tie down and on the left side with a bolt through the upper deck drain hole by the engine. The stainless steel ladder was then mounted to this piece of hardwood. I coated the hardwood with teak oil and so far the durability has been great. I give it a fresh coat each year. I hope the photos come out big enough to see what I did. If not, e-mail me and I will e-mail you back the pictures of the installation. Troll
