two stroke or four stroke

I'm a new member and I'm looking at either a 170cc or 195cc and was wondering whether to get the two or four stroke engine to fish in the bay and to go off shore?

I have owned and worked on both. Each has it's own advantages and dis-advantages pending on each person needs and if propped correct, both are pretty fuel efficient engines now... Some things that most over look though when buying one are,

1. In the public eye, I feel that the 4 stroke has a higher re-sale value. Still to many remember all the blown power heads in 2 stroke engines over the years.

2. If somebody you love has the tendency to turn green in 95 degree heat while in a pitching hull while sniffing / huffing burning 2 stroke oil (though less if you use Synthetic 2 stroke oil) then the 4 stoke is your engine of choice

Now some will say that a 2 stroke is a faster lighter engine... Very True, but no Triumph hull is really designed for a lot of speed as it is, so to me that becomes moot point after a while in this debate. These are fishing hulls and run best at cruise speeds and not designed to run 75 mph. If you want something that goes fast, then go get a Cigarette Hull with 2 big block Chevys

I agree with some of Putershark's points. I assume that you will be buying a new motor. Yes old 2 strokes smelt bad and had problems and old four strokes are heavy and can cost alot to fix. I have a 75hp etech {2 stroke} that is light, fast and good on fuel. It is the cleanest burning 2 stroke out there and I would put it against any 4 stroke for emissions. There is no smell of fumes at all.It is also as quiet as a 4stroke. I agree that you don't need to go 75 mph in your triumph, but if you are pulling anyone or carring a heavy load an etech will get you on plane faster. As for resale I don't know. 2 or 4 stroke there are a lot of good choices out there, just thought I would give you my 2 cents worth, Good luck with your new boat. Bob

Go to www.evinrude.com and watch the "tug of war" video. They take two of the same boats and put a 150 etec on one and a 150 Yammi on the other and strap them together stern to stern and hammer em' down. It is quite interesting. I won't tell you the ending.

its just a matter of time before EPA impliments strick laws and very expensive fines for oil changes of 4 stroke outboards being done while on boat lifts. I think the new technology of 2 strokes (evinrude) would be the wiser considering the trouble and expense of oil changes alone. Oil changes on lifts are quickly becoming an enviromental hazard and the rest of the story will follow quickly.

if you looked at the bow rise clip ,i think you may agree with me that alot of the 190 and 191 models are suffering from stern obesity from heavy four strokes
