Conservation Alert:
Support Gov. Riley’s Pledge to Veto Open-Loop LNG Terminals



Your help is urgently needed to encourage Gov. Riley to veto an “open-loop” liquefied natural gas terminal proposed by McMoRan Exploration just 16 miles southeast of Venice.



Open-loop LNG systems convert liquefied gas back into a gaseous state by circulating seawater through a radiator-like system to reheat it. Each open-loop system filters over 100 millions of gallons of seawater per day, then chlorinates it to prevent fouling in the intake pipe. The governors of impacted states have a say in whether corporations can elect to use open-loop technology, which is cheaper to operate. Gov. Riley pledged last year to oppose any open-loop terminal and support only terminals using systems known to have negligible impacts on marine life.



The time has come for conservationists to let the Governor know we support his position to protect the fish and marine life of the Gulf of Mexico. Dear Governor Riley,



As a member of the Coastal Conservation Association of Alabama, I too am concerned about the serious threat open-loop LNG terminals pose to the marine resources of the Gulf of Mexico. Your courageous stand against this type of destructive technology gave me great hope last year that fragile marine life would not be subjected to the damage this technology is very likely to cause. Your stance against open-loop technology is shared by sportsmen and conservationists all over the state.



I am writing to encourage you to follow through on your pledge to veto open-loop terminals, and deny McMoRan Exploration the chance to take such a huge, unnecessary risk with the marine resources of our great state
