Use fluorocarbon as backing instead of mono. Fluorocarbon doesn't hold water and it wont rot-out like mono. This is especially a good thing when you are spooled up with braids on your reels for years. Also if your using braids/superlines check out Gamma fluorocarbon for leaders. It has twice the flex and shock resistents of regular fluorocarbons, which is real good thing when using no-stretch braids. I'm a die-hard Seaguar and Ande floro user and the Gamma line has been working out really good on my braided outfits.

What brand bubble gum is getting the "bite"?
I am using 2 spools of 65# PowerPro on a Penn 8500. It was the only way to get the amount of line I needed on the reel. I use a mono topshot then a fluro leader @4'. Using the right knots are extremely important with braids to mono/fluro and braid to braid.
Like the idea of using fluro as the spool backing though, it's just a pain unspooling and re-spooling.
I really like mono for making shrimp/crab eyes on fly's though, try that with your braids.
