Throwable PDF Type IV
This is not directly related to a Triumph boat, but I thought to post this somewhere in case anyone else thought the same as me. I was escorted back to the dock today by the CG for not having a throwable PDF on board (regardless of how many life jacket you have). This is my second time being boarded and I never had one, however, it seems that it is correct that you are required to have a type IV throwable PDF (at least in California anyway).

Yep - In California it is required that you have one on board.
I bought my boat new and they provided all the mandatory safety equipment including a Type IV. http://www.dbw.ca.gov/pubs/ABC/reqequip.pdf Take a look at page 29. Bill |

Virginia too! Actually, I'm pretty sure it's a Coast Guard requirement...not a state requirement. Also, it must be out and "immediately available" for use...not stowed in a compartment. Makes sense, because if you need it, you need it NOW!
Hey Vic, thanks for the reminder to check the flares' expiration dates. I found this link if you want to find someone to perform a Vessel Safety Check (VSC). There is also a link to perform an online VSC to see if you would pass the check. Neat stuff! http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/vsc.htm

CAGROVE,
Same in NC. It mus tbe readily available. Found out last week by the CG. I was on the boat by myself and was boarded. My throwable was in a compartment and they explained the rules.I told them no one would be on the boat to throw it to me if I fell out. "They didn't think that was funny". I did have an inflatable life jacket on and the kill switch hooked to me so they let me slide. John D. |

In Louisiana, if your boat is 16 ft. to less than 26 ft., you need a Type IV PFD. This is a web page that lists the required equipment in Louisiana, http://www.boat-ed.com/la/course/p4-17_checklist.htm
