Nitrogen gas w/ welder
I have a friend that works as a maintance engineer for a lab. During one visit at his work I noticed a plastic welder on his work bench. He had been experimenting w/ this tool welding section of plastic for the lab.
His method of welding plastic was exactly the same as mine, but he said that using compressed air oxidizes the plastic, causing it to discolor and weaken the weld. He uses nitrogen gas (inert gas) w/ the plastic welder. The air hose from the welding handle goes to a "T" fitting, which goes to the compressor and the other to the tank of nitrogen. Each gas supply has a valve at the "T" fitting. When the welder is not actually in use, he switches to compressed air to keep the welder from over heating. When actually welding plastic, he switches from compressed air to nitrogen gas. His welds look clean and the bond is strong!! Havent setup mine yet, but I think this is the ticket. |
