My wife and I were out running on the Susquehanna river for about two ours this evening having a great time. The engine is a 2001 Johson 40HP 2/C with oil injection. Brought the boat back into the launch area and tied it up to the dock and shut down the motor while I went to get the trailer.
Backed the trailer into the water, got into the boat to start it to drive up onto the trailer, and NADA! I thought as first I left it in gear and that's why it would not kick over. Seems like an electrical problem. I removed the ignition cut off clip, and put it back on, turned the key and nothing. No warning lights, no starter. The fish finder is working as is the bilge and aerator pumps. I wanted to trim up the engine to pull it out, and that was not working either. It's like the engine electrical system is dead. I used ropes to pull the boat into position and trailered it home. It's now in the garage. I thought maybe the battery died on me, but put the charger on it and in about two minutes the 80% charge LED came on. So I figure I will let it sit over night, and tomorrow take the connections off the battery, clean them good and put them back on. I not putting much hope in this operation though Does anyone have any other suggestions. Could the ignition switch gone bad? I was supposed to take my son fishing tomorrow, but I think I may be doing some more trouble shooting. Any suggestions would be appreciated. BobK 2001 Logic 150SC 40 HP Johnson

Got any fuses on the boat ignition circuitry, and inside the cowl of the motor? With the tilt/trim not working either, it sure sounds like a fuse/breaker problem.
Were you able to trim/tilt without the key in the ignition, previously? That would help you decide if the ignition switch is flaky. |

There is a tilt/trim on the side of the motor as well as on the throttle. Neither appears to be working, but when I am back at the motor and hit the up or down switch button I can hear a faint noise, but there is no movement.
I'm going to email the previous owner and see if this every happened to him. Hopefully it's just a loose connection somewhere. Thanks for the reply BobK |

Problem solved. This morning I pulled all the connectors off the battery. Gave the posts and connectors a good cleaning with a piece of fine grit sandpaper. Connected everything and tried the tilt/trim switch on the motor. It worked. Turned on the ignition and the warning beep sounded and the LED indicators cycled. Pulled the boat out of the garage and put the muffs on and it started right up. Shut it down and restarted it 5 - 6 times and each time it started up with no problems. The battery does look like it has seen quite a few seasons, but according to the meter I bought at K-Mart this morning it has a full charge.
So for now - I will keep my fingers crossed while I enjoy the boat. Thanks for all the suggestions. |

Glad to hear you're back in business. I had a similar problem a while back and it turned out to be a loose connection at the battery. Little things like that will drive you mad if you let them.
Tight lines.

I'm glad I found the problem too - my wallet is smiling. It would have been very embarrassing to take it to the shop, get charged a couple of large bills only to find out the battery connections were cruddy.
So now it's shopping for a bimini top time. Any 150 owners out there with any suggestions? I am thinking a 6' top rather than a 4' more shade. Would appreciate any advice on tops anyone may have. Dos and don'ts etc. BobK |

Thanks Jim,
Good looking tops, and good looking prices. Drilling holes in my boat always makes me jittery, so it's measure 4 - 5 times, drill once. So it's off to get the tape measure and then I think I will place an order. Thanks for the URL. BobK |
