Angry Trim issues with a 150 cc 2005 with f50 yamaha

My wife and I recently purchased a brand new triumph 150 cc and ordered all the trimmings (bimini top, swim platform, fishing chair, bow pad, mooring cover). We find that the boat after 8 hrs of usage is of yet uncapable of planing out with our combined weight of 350lbs (positioned anywhere), and a full tank of gas. The motor is a yamaha four stroke efi 50 hp. The boat is great but the performance isn't there. It has a 13 pitch prop and with a 1/4 tank of gas and 1 person the boat will plane. Once on plane the boat motor turns at the full 5500rpm throttle that the motor is supposed to operate at. The boat is nice and we like it but to say the least we are extremely disappointed. The dealership is attempting to figure out what's up and hopefully they will be able to help us. It just feels like the motor doesn't have enough down trim when it is up on plane and also there is very little low end torque. I was curious if anyone has had issues with the boat needing transom wedges or trim tabs. Thanks for any info..

Have you tried a Doel Fin? They provide stern lift. Another more expensive option if a Permatrim.

I presume that the motor comes with power trim and you understand the use. It may not be apparent how to use it if you came off a smaller boat, as was my case. The other thing to do is get a fin - Doel, Sport, or Bobs Machine. Not sure it matters much, and it seems to be well agreed on this site that it will definately help. Lastly your prop may part of the problem. My 170 CC with a 70 hp has a 19 pitch (13x19), and I know I could back down to a 17 pitch. A 13 pitch sounds real aggressive and it may not produce enough speed to push the bow down. Iwould have the dealer put a 15 or 17 pitch on to see if that helps. Then you add the fin to take full advantage.

Try http://www.miwheel.com/MIWheel/propit/main.htm and see what your prop options are. You can then contact your dealer to see about getting some test props to see what what works best.

I have a 150CC and I am about 280 (Nix the whopper jokes ya'll, Lol) I have a Yamaha 40hp 4 stroke and my rig with my fat behind, all my onboard gear and a full tank of fuel will do an honest 30 knts accoding to both the spedo and the gps.

You have either a trim problem, a loose prop, or the wrong pitch on the prop.

Go back to the dealer and tell them you have a problem.

I was going to ask if you'd left the trailer attached to the boat, but you sound smarter than that. (Grin)

triumph's response to the issue

according to Foley's marine triumph said the boat had a deformed keel line from the mold and that they will heat the plastic and reform it.... does that sound right to anyone... I didn't know that this material was able to be remolded like that.... What happens to the foam imbedded in the hull

If that were my new boat, I would insist on a replacement. You will never have peace of mind if you keep this one. You are well within your rights to request this. From your description, this sounds like more than a simple repair.

From Triumph's site:

Q. What happens if the hull deflects?

A. A small dent or deflection will not cause permanent damage unless stored for a long period of time. The material has memory and will return to its original shape when properly stored. This usually takes about a week, depending on the degree of the distortion. Large dents and deflection can be a problem if the yield point of the material has been exceeded. Prevention is the best cure.

That sounds like a crock to me, please keep us posted as to the outcome.

Well. I'll post what I have been told by my dealer regarding these same issues. My 150CC w/ 40 HP 4 stroke has the same problem. Even with just myself (150 lbs) and very little gear it seems to have issues coming up on plane. I have returned it to the dealer and he has made an appt. w/ the factory to have small trim tabs added to the hull. Apparantly, this is a known problem and they do have a way to fix it. I've asked about changing props or adding the hydrofoil and they said it would help but wouldn't fix the problem. It is headed for the factory in NC on the 12th. I'll give you an update when I get it back.

Happy Boating!!!
