Hokie,
Did you look at the Lenco tabs as well?? I don't want to hassle with hydraulic fluid if I can avoid it

Hey Scott,

Your gonna luv the 170cc and I've been using on Long Island for the last three season. This year I have upgraded to a 190Bay. Are you dealing with the guys at Great Bay? The 170cc is great for the south shore because of it's shallow draft. I got in many spots others bottomed out in.

As far as options go, if you plan on going swimming, etc, the swim platform is very handy. If you want some shade the Bimini Top is a good option. You may also want to look into space for more side mounted rod holders.

For fishing and boating, a combo FF/GPS is handy to have especially on the south shore where all the creeks look the same - especially at nite - and the FF can help keep you out of the shallow in the Great South Bay.

If your interested in a Bimini Top - I have a Triumph Factory (Red) Model available from my old boat (since the dealer didn't want it in my trade-in) that I'll take offers on. It's in great shape.

Maybe we'll catch up someday - I'm on the North or South Shores almost every weekend over the summer.

When it's calm, I frequently cross over from CT to buoy 11B and Eaton's Neck.

Great Bay will never get any more business from me - but maybe my bad experience was limited to a certain salesman that is no longer there. Promised me all kinds of stuff and didn't follow through on most of it - warranty registrations, poor rigging, broken bimini, damaged prop, no spare tire for my trip back to CT, etc, etc, etc. I love my boat, but that dealer has issues.

Yes we fish - when my kids let me (they ar 6 & 3). I frequently joke
that they dont have patience to get fish in a fish store .

Cinc:

Sorry to here the problems. I found with GBM that I needed to stay on
top of them. But perhaps thats because I generally dont trust salesman
and dealerships. I got my 170cc from them 3yrs ago and just upgraded
with them to the 190Bay (in my avatar). I probably would have preferred
to deal with Dick at Merritt (small plug) after speaking with him on the
phone, but the local dealer still has its pluses as being just that local.
Unlike when I purchase my Dodge Durango - there just are not a lot
of choices of local dealers. All in all, I was pleased with GBM, salesman
was always friendly and helpful. Hopefully this hold true this spring when
I pickup my boat after winter storage.

With Scott down in Merrick, I'm central in Plainview and fish and boat
North/South shore, maybe we can put together all this plastic one day
on the sound

There is a fair amount of plastic in CT that regularly makes it to LI Sound. I would be tempted to have a NE TBOT there, but I was really impressed by the fishing last year at the Cape and would be glad to go back up there again. Distances and amount of water were no more than LI Sound and I kept up in my 170 (barely) chasing the 190 and 210's. It would have been tougher if the weather was snotty, but that would be true on the Sound also.

Kevin: I just purchased a 2002 170 Sportsman model and was reading these posts in the forum. I am new to boating and purchased this to use in Long Island and up in Maine with my grandkids. I am picking the boat up next week and trailering it to Maine where I will try my hand at launching from the trailer and firing up the 50 hp Honda engine. I hope to get out to tour the islands there and do a little fishing.
What do you recommend keeping on the boat at all times?
How much rope and chain should I have?
It has a depth finder (but it did not work when we snapped it into the carriage).
I spoke to Dick at Merritt and he suggested a factory swim platform because of the shape of the transom on this model.
I also asked him about a bimini top - he suggested that I get a single piece model locally because the factory one does not "ship well" and would be less costly. My model is tiller driven - will the bimini top interfere with the engine when stored?
Do you still have your red factory model?
Are they easy to install or should I have a dealer do it?
I am probably asking "rookie questions" but that is what I am. Any feedback you can give to me would be appreciated.
thanks, Joe

Welcome to the 170 club Scott,

I have a 2006 with a Honda 75, a little heavy in the tail, but overall a good soild unit.
I fish everything from the reservoirs in SW VA & Central NC to the coast, then south to the GA / FL border. Freshwater, saltwater, deep lakes, shallow flats, chop, swells, the boat takes it all in stride, I chicken out long before the conditions get past what the boat can handle.
After time and use you will set yours up to your specific needs, this site has a lot of great advice, and a lot of different folks using their boats in different conditions.

Enjoy yourself.
Kevin
