170CC questions

Hi All,

I just put a deposit down on a new 2005 170CC. Please let me know the positives and negatives of the boat. Also, please let me know what options should I put in the boat before my first voyage. Please advise on what kind od depthfinder and am/fm cd radio I should put in. Mostly I will be using the boat for fishing.

Thanks in advance for the feedback,
Scottg73

Scott, welcome to the site.

My first suggestion is to take your time and just start reading the Forum postings and the Articles.

Second, you do not say where you will be fishing. Based on my understanding, where your boat will be used will determine the equipment you may want.

For example, if I was going off the coast of North Carolina, I would have a lot more more anchor rope than I do for the Gulf off of Venice and Sarasota FL.

We wish you much success and great fishing and hope you enjoy this site as much as we do. Looking forward to pictures.

Congradulations Scott,
You'll love your new 170CC. I have a 2004 170CC with a 60 HP Yamaha 4 stroke. Like Vic said, read all the post on this site and get a feel for what others are doing to their boats. Each model is different. The only negative that I feel the 170CC has is space for your extras. The console is small and limits what electronics you use. I use my 170 mostly for fishing in salt water on the southeast coast on NC. I have a Garmin 178C combination GPS/ Fishfinder. I would rather have a separate unit for each, but space is the main factor. I have an AM/FM CD player with 4 speakers and a separate 200 watt amplifier. That's about all the space available on my small console. If you get a stereo make sure it has plenty of watts or it will sound distorted when you turn it up. Remember you're outside, not in a normal room. That's the questions you asked, but the main concern would be safety. Where you'll be fishing is the key factor. I would get some sort of swim platform. Getting in any boat is difficult and I go out alone often. I use a handheld VHF radio which works fine where I fish/play. Good anchor with plenty of chain and rope, some flares, and you're hooked up and ready to go. I really enjoy my Triumph. I've been as far as 20 miles offshore (with other boats, calm water) and felt safe and comfortable in my 170CC. If you have any other questions, someone on this site will be able to help. Enjoy rigging your boat! That's half the fun.

Scott,
Again, congrats on your new boat. If you've already put a deposit on the boat then you already know the positives...as for the negatives, that's just someone else's opinion anyway. I also have a 170CC/60 hp Merc. I love the boat. I think Fridaysoff made a great point about the swim platform. Even with someone else in the boat, getting a person out of the water can be a real challenge. I put one on my boat just for the peace of mind knowing that if I go overboard I can get back in. I fish primarily in fresh water rivers with lots of boat traffic. If I have a breakdown, I know it won't be long before help arrives. In addition to the standard Coast Guard safety items, I would suggest a good GPS (even a handheld model would work, that's what I use) and a cell phone and/or VHF radio. Add a quality first aid kit and a good pair of pliers/wire cutters to help remove any wayward hooks and you're set. Have a great time on your new toy.

Thanks Vic, John, and Chuck for your reply. Your tips were very helpful. I will be fishing on the south shore of Long Island in NY. As suggested, I will read through the other postings.

Thanks again,
Scott

Thumbs up New 170CC

Scott,

One thing I did not see the other guys mention is make sure you have the front seat. It may come standard on the 2005's not sure, I have a 2003 170Cool, New to me so I am in kinda the same boat, so to say, as you are. I did get out once or twice before our weather cooled down and really missed not having that seat to use while trolling. Congrats on your boat, I have found mine to be the best ride of any comparable boat on the water. Just pay attention to the details of caring for the ropylene. Keeping the boat trailered correctly etc.

Dave

Scott,
Trust me brother, you will not be disappointed with your 170cc. My wife and I just came back from fishing. This was the biggest work out the boat has had since I have bought it(March 05). I have always babied the the boat, but with winter tides in FL it gets real shallow, we were in 1 foot of water and the boat never hit bottom. Now my skeg plate has a chunk out of it as of today, but we never had a problem. WE were in 7 feet when that happened, must have been a submerged rock or something. We decided to go out to deeper water, and it got pretty choppy(light chop my *** acording to the the weather channel forecast), and still no problems. I loved this boat the minute I got it on the water, and now I love it even more. WE have a depth/fish finder)(Lowrance), Sony am/fm cd player, and a Garmin hand held GPS. Feel free to contact me anytime.
Brian

Scott,

I agree with the others, the 17CC is a great boat. I've got a 2002 with 80HP Yamaha 4 stroke. I added trim tabs to it last summer and has made a huge difference. Probably depends on what engine you get, but the 80 I have is pretty heavy for this boat and it had a tendency to pound, especially if I was by myself. Tabs have eliminated this problem. Got the Bennett M80 sport tabs.

Enjoy your new boat.

Kelly
