Hi I used the portside compartment to put my second battery. the switch is in the starboard side compartment. I ran all the wires for the battery though a piece of plastic electrical conduit secured to the inside of the bulk head in front of the gas tank. I use the cc fo stowing safety items

BLACTER,

Have two batteries on 170 CC. The one on the right compartment on the stern is in the typical battery box. Have an isolator switch to kill all power on boat to avoid any draining of power when in storage. The space for the battery box has an uneven deck due to drainage channels so I made some supports of pressure treated wood to provide a solid base with no rocking and did not block water from exiting this area. The strap holds everything in place with the battery cover on.

The draw on my starting battery beyond cranking is the bilge pump, aerator pump and depth finder. No VHF radio, AM-CD-CD. I use a hand held as needed and like the quiet. No battery problems on 2002 boat since purchased new.

My second battery is used only for the trolling motor whis is bow mounted. This battery is in the center console with just a battery tray and strap. I still have room for a box with my emergency and first aid stuff. No fancy charging or isolator system. I have a charger which I use when the trolling motor has been used. A simple AC-DC meter is handy to confirm battery charge to avoid topping off the charge when not really needed. This battery could be moved to the stern for starting if really needed. I subscribe to the KISS principle.

Hi Jim,

I subscribe to the KISS theory of doing things as well which is why I have an onboard charger that handlesall 3 of my batteries. When I get back from boating, I simply plug it in and everything is taken care of for my next trip. (Most onboard chargers have a maintenance mode after the batteries reach full charge.)

I guess you could say I also subscribe to the LAZY way of doing things which is why I have a plastic boat too - no fiberglass to fuss over.

Happy charging,

woodNfish

Batteries

We still use a single battery, most of our fishing is offshore trolling so our alternator is always taking the slack in the battery, While the boat is stored I have a "Schumacher" battery maintainer, it's inexpensive and microchip controlled keeps battery in tip top shape without a overcharge, We have ALL the electronics onboard and running while underway, no problems thus far, but I do like TYGH's approach to the dual battery switch idea. Kiss is always a good subscription.
