3m & bottom painting?

I have five 170CC's that I need to paint the bottoms on. I'm grateful for the instructions on this forum. My question is how much 3M 94 tape primer will I need per boat. My supplier will only sell me a case of four gallon cans and I don't want to buy more than I need. The dealer that sold us the boats wanted to charge $800 per boat but my boss declined. Thanks for the input.

Carlos, We have painted a few 17' bottoms and used less than a Qt. per boat. It is very easy to wipe on with a rag. You can then use your choice of bottom paint. The primer has a short shelf life, so don't buy large quantities. Dealers should stock the primer, If yours doesn't, Give me a call.

Dick,
Thanks for the reply. I didn't think It would take that much per boat and you've confirmed it. I'll pass it on to the marina manager and call, you if he doesn't have a source. Now if I can only get this done soon because we have people banging on the door to rent them. We've had them parked in front of the marina at the Naval base and they sure draw a crowd. We're already talking about five to ten more and two 19' for our chase boats. I'd love to get rid of the flat bottoms.

I bought a new 19' Triumpf last fall in Mass. at Triumpf dealer. Now I try to get the bottom painted in my favorite boatyard but I cannot buy the primer. Dealer says it's not for over-the counter sale. west Marine does not sell it. What gives?

Fred, I spoke to West marine in Hampton, Virginia and though it's not a shelf item, They said they would get it in a day or so. If that ddoesn't work, get it from Dick at Merritt Marine who is a vendor on this site.
