Fuel Filter

Fellow 170 owners. I'm about to install a fuel filter on my boat and want to know where you've installed yours and what problems you may have encountered during the install. Do you need to add to the fuel line or did you just cut and install. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Cargrove, Mine is in the same compartment as the battery, mounted in the front of the compartment. The boat had the filter already installed when I purchased it so can't help with the installation.

At the risk of sounding totally ignorant; my engine has a fuel filter. I'm willing to bet that yours does too. Why would you want to add another? I bought a new fuel filter for my engine, but haven't put it on yet because the hoses are so tight I'm not sure about how to remove the old one without damaging the hoses so I have enough length to get the new filter on. I had not considered putting a filter in between the tank and the engines fuel filter.

Maybe I should have described it as a fuel/water separator filter. The inline fuel filter on the engine is just to keep out large particles that may be sucked up from the tank. With the introduction of Ethanol 10% gas showing up everywhere and the well documented properties of this mixture attracting moisture I thought it would be prudent to install a 10 micron filter to take care of any water that may get in the system. All gas stations here in Virginia are going to the 10% Ethanol for the summer months and most have posted warnings to boat owners that unless you have a filter you run the risk of gumming up your carbs. Fishing time is precious as is, I don't want to have the boat in the shop fixing something that I could have prevented.

Chuck,
I would install a water separator filter on the boat regardless of ethanol fuel. You can ruin a high dollar engine with a small amount of water that you get with a boat if you don't keep your tank full while it sits up for a while due to condensation and hot days/ cool nights. I also keep Sta-Bil in the fuel tank until earley summer. My filter on my 2004 170CC is located in the port stern compartment on the outside bulkhead. It came from the dealer that way, but I had to replace the filter housing with a stainless steel one due to rust forming on the lip of the old one. Very easy to install. Great peace of mind.I don't think any filter inside of the engine cowling is a water separator type filter just the inline filter like you mentioned. Good luck with the install. You should have enough spare hose to make it work. You may have to get a filter that will accept two fuel tanks so you can run your hose either way. You can close off one side with the brass plugs that come with it.

I have a 2003 Mercury 60hp 2 stroke and it does not have a fuel/water separater on the engine. It does have an inline gas filter to help screen out particles (and may clog with water and /or debris). My filter arrived last night so I should be putting it in this week...as always, thanks for all the info guys...I'll let you know how it goes.

BTW...here's a link I found on fuel filters from shipshape boating...

Just an update....I installed the fuel filter last night...I put it in the port side storage area under the rear seat against the transom. That seemed to give the best clearance to the filter/drain bowl and still leave room to store my junk. I would like to thank Moretodaythanyesterday for all of his helpful hints. And thanks to everyone else who contributed to this thread. You guys rock!! I'll try to post a few pictures in a day or two.

Hey Cargrove make sure you oiled that seal on the filter as if you didn't it will be a real bear to get off as they seem to weld themselves to the filter seat over time.
