Rod Holders on 170CC

Read recently on this site about rod holders on a 170. Some say the walls are not wide enough to mount them into the boat. If one was to use the bolt-on type, can they simply be used with screws without a plate behind them? I can buy the clamp-on type for the front that hook to the rail, but need advice on rod holders for the back. Appreciate anyone's comments and advice -

I used the Scotty flush mounted rod holders on my 170CC. It does require you to drill a hole but you just screw them down and they're rock solid. I filled the inside with Rule to seal out any water. They also provide a very flexible way to rig your boat. For example...you can put your rods out to the side to spread your trolling pattern or put one out to the side and one straight back on the same side. They rotate 360 degrees and can be raised and lowered as you see fit. You can also mount them on your railing...very flexible.

Here's a couple of pics:

There are more pictures in the 170CC modifications section of the photo gallery. I bought mine from www.cabelas.com. I hope this helps.

Cagrove - Thank you for taking the time to reply and post the pictures. They look exactly like what I need. I was looking at Cabela's site last night and also saw one where you mount a track and can mount up to I beleive 4 rod holders in the track. However, I like your method better because they can be mounted along each side where needed. Thanks again -

I went to the trouble of cutting in SS Perko type rod holders. I wish I had thought of what you had done. Far easier and more flexible.

Mobyduck,
I Used The Same Scotty Flush Mounts As Cagrove. What A Breeze To Install Just Drill A Pilot Hole And Use A Roto-zip To Cut Out The Hole For The Base Plate All Of About 10 Seconds.(melts Like Butter). Make Lots Of Checks And Measurments Cause This A Nice Size Hole To Cut Out. The Only Thing I Did Different Is I Bought The Rod Holder Extenstions. They Are 6" And Made Of Ss. It Get My Rods Off The Rail And Gives More Options Of Rod Postions Hope This Helps!!!!
