90hp 4stroke on 170cc?

I have a 170cc 2000 logic rated for a max. 90hp. Does that mean a 90 4 stroke is o.k? Dick@merritmarine what is your advise. I know there may be a chine walk issue. How dangerous is that. If I get a 90 to hall all 5 members of my family will slowing down when I am fishin alone surfice. My next choice is a 75/4stroke.

Mark-

There will be a problem with too much weight with this engine and would probably void your hull warrenty.

I have a 01 logic with a 90 Yami 2 stroke which will fly with just me onboard. I have had 6 (large) adults with lots of gear and the boat also did fine but just took longer to get onto plane. I have had no handling problems (ie chine walk) but then I don't often get into WOT.

There is a warning lable now on the transom limiting the weight of the OB that can be used. This was specifcally introduced to keep owners from putting the 4 stroke 90s on that boat.

Now in reality you would be much better off with a 4 stroke 70-75 or even a 60. The boat really does not need that much hp to run well.

Mark, The transom weight limit is 388lbs. A Yamaha 90hp 4 stroke is 369lbs, so technically you are OK, however, I have run 17s with heavy motors and was not happy with the attitude of the boat stopped or going slow. I'm 225lbs, so when i'm in the rear of the boat it takes water over the transom. I think the 17s run great with 60 to 75 hp. About chine walking, I like it, and can control the boat when it's running on the cavation plate.

Question Max rating: 90 hp logic 17 vs. 75 hp triumph 170

Anyone know why the horsepower limit on the logic/triumph 17 went from 90 to 75? The weight limit apparently stayed the same at 388 lbs.

Also, anyone know if you'd pass a game warden or coast guard check with 90 hp and a 75 hp rating, even if you met the weight limit of 388 lbs?

BTW, Nissan makes an interesting direct-fuel-injected 90 that weighs about 310.

I was told by the marine patrol officer that gave a boating safety class I took that you can be fined for exceeding the HP rating of your boat. I have a 17 Bass with a 75hp two stroke. I can run 43-45 mph with just me in the boat. That's plenty fast. I'm sure I'dhave no problem pulling a skier if I wanted.

I have a 60hp 2 stroke Mercury on my 170CC and I have pulled one skier with 4 other people in the boat...no problem. IMHO you will not need the 90HP motor. Since the 170 is not rated for it, why chance it. Go with the 75HP and don't worry about whether it's legal or not. You will have all the power you need. The last thing I want to do on those precious days that I can get on the water is keep looking over my shoulder worrying if my boat is legal or not. Just my two cents. Good luck.

2003 170 Cool with 60 Four Stroke Suzuki

My 170 Cool will haul 5 adults, plane with no problem and run 35-40 depending on conditions. A 70 or 75 should do you more than fine.

MSANDEL, something to keep in mind I'm not sure about yamaha's but the mercury90
and 75 four strokes weight are the same you will have to go with a 60 to get lighter.
