Triumph 170 CC HP????

Is a 50HP Honda 4 stroke enough to move this boat along??? or is this going to be underpowered

Thanks

Just My Humble Opinion But I Think A 60 Hp On A 170cc Would Give You An Overall Much Better Performance. A 30 Hp On Your 170cc Would Move It "along" But Would You Be Happy In The Long Run? I Have A 50ph On My 150cc And Cant Imagine Anything Smaller. I Move Right Along When I Need To.

I agree. I have a 170CC with a 60hp Mercury 2 stroke and the boat scoots right along. While the 50hp would get you up on plane (eventually) it wouldn't be long before you were wishing for a larger engine. However, the only way to really find out is to take one for a "sea trial" and see how it handles. Just my 1/50 of a dollar.

Thanks for the info guys. I thought it might be alittle underpowered. I hope to get out on a sea trail with the boat. Any "Problems" with this boat I should be looking for??? The 17's seem to be pretty popular, leaking hatches seem to be the biggest issue?

No real problems to worry about. The only really dry storage is in the cooler under the seat. A lot of folks build shelves in the aft compartments to keep items up off of the floor and a little dryer. There are always little things to consider like extra rod storage, extra batteries, trolling motor mounting, etc. but nothing that I would consider unique to this model of boat. You could do a lot worse than a 170CC. Good luck.

Thanks again for the info. I sold my Sea Hunt 202 last year and have been biting at the chip for another boat. Triumphs are really different than a fiberglass - gel coat boat. I'm glad I found this web site. Is it me or do Triumphs take a beating on other boat/fishing web sites? I think my biggest concern is Hull deformation. I saw this last year on a boat that was at a Triumph dealer for some work to be done. The hull had a big dent in it from sitting on the trailer? The boat was a 2000, have things changed?

Like football teams or cars or anything else, everyone has an opinion. Some folks are more verbal about it than others and feel a need to justify why they are right. Let'em rant and rave...who cares. As for the hull deformation, that can be an issue if the boat is not supported correctly on the trailer. However, Triumph and EZLoader have teamed up and matched trailers and boats so that the Triumph is supported correctly when trailering. I've had my 2003 model for a little over 2 1/2 years and it still looks like it did when I picked it up at the dealer. And while the "other" guys are busy cleaning and waxing their nice shiney "glass" boats, you can rinse yours off and go tell them just how wrong their opinion really is!

Thanks for the info once again. If I decide to purchase a Triumph I'm sure I'll be spending some time here

Put the largest HP engine on it that you can. On a 17' that should be a 75HP. A 4 stroke will be heavier than a 2 stroke, but will also probably be a lot quieter. Some of the new 2 strokes out perform the 4 strokes on gas mileage.

You will have an easier time selling your boat with a full-size engine on it if and when you do decide to sell it.

If I buy a Triumph I plan to have it for a long time. When I sold my Sea Hunt I swore I would never go thru that crap again.
