Max HP

G'Day Gang,

I'm starting to panic a bit about wheather my boat will have enough power to do what I want it to

I have ordered a 170DC with just about every option ... including a 75 E-Tec.

At 5.2M (17feet) most boats in Australia would be rated to 115hp ... so i'm worried about having enough grunt for skiing and such.

My current boat has a is 15 foot with a 60hp E-Tec and while it does an adequate job when kneeboarding and double skis, I would like to be moving towards a 90hp.

Can somebody please tell me how quick a 170 with a 75hp is ??

We run five 170CC with F60 four strokes. They are not the quickest out of the hole but reached 38mph with three aboard and trimmed out. With the larger engine and a two stroke, you should have a marked difference. Here is the performance bulletin for the boat with a 75 four stroke. Time to plane was 3.01 seconds which is nothing to sneeze at. Hope this helps.

Whitto,
I own a 170CC with a Yamaha 60hp 4 stroke. I reach 37mph (gps) with mine. I fish a lot by myself and find the 60hp setup to be a great combination. I've pulled my son wake boarding and sking with no problems. The 75 etec should work fine with your boat. Most 17 foot boats (fiberglass) weigh 1200 lbs or better where ours top out at 1000. Here in the USA we have a problem getting insurance for boats that have an engine larger than the maximum hp rating for a specific boat. I doubt if you could order one from the factory larger than 75hp. If the 90hp etec weights less than the 388 lb. engine weight limit, the boat would probably handle it, but again you're above the max. HP rating. I don't know if that would be an issue Downunder. Your dealer could possibly workout a swap with you if there are no other issues where you live. See if you can find someone that already has one with a 75 Etec and hitch a ride. Good luck.

No worries mate, I have a 2006 170cc 75hp etech and have tons of power. With just me [285lbs] full fuel and gear and cooler I can get to 41-42mph in no time. With 4 men I have never had a problem with power or getting on a plane. you shouln't have any problems pulling anything. The etech is faster than any 4stroke out of the hole and just keeps on going. So don't panic you will have lots of power and the 170cc is a light boat. Good luck!

Thanks Guys,

I'm not out to change the 75 for a 90. The laws are the same here and insurance won't cover you if you put too big a motor on.

I'm hanging for the test drive ... (and i'm very jealous Elroy) ... but I suppose I can always look at the 195DC with up to a 150hp if I have to, it's only money
