Has anybody installed a 2nd bilge pump as a backup? It would also pump out the water faster when swamped. I guess the main problem would be drain thru the transom or could you tie into the original pump drain?

I drilled a second outlet hole. If one or the other pump failed the working pump could possibly pump water back into the boat as well as overboard, reducing the working pumps overboard capacity. Better safe than sorry!

Mine failed about 12 miles out one year. The overflow from the livewell filled the bilge to the drains on deck before I noticed it.Now I keep a pump with clips and a short section of hose in my center console that I can clip to the battery should the main pump fail.Works for me.

I bought a 2nd bilge pump and about 6' of hose and have alligator clips on several feet of power cable. I keep this in the dry storage under the console. If for some reason by bilge pump on the boat went out I can always pull this out as a backup. I'll probably never need it but it falls under the category of "better safe than sorry".

High&Dry, do you have any pictures of how you installed the second pump?

CRIMAR30.. I measured the distance from the center line of the stern to the original thru hull fitting and drilled a hole on the opposite side in the same configuration. I placed a new thru hull fitting in the hole and then placed the new bilge pump on the port side of the keel, attached it, and cut the drain hose to fit. I then wired the pump the way the original was wired but used a separate instrument panel switch for it.

Thanks for the great answers! I'm going to set up a spare pump with clips, I can always install it permanently later.

I always keep a manual pump on hand in case the bilge goes out. The old fashioned way works too - especially if there multiple people on the boat.
