Where is the high speed pickup for the bait well?

I have a 170 DC with a bait well similar to the 170 CC: it has the pump with the switch, it has the drain on the transom, but, where does it pickup from? I looked at the back and there are only four holes: two drains, the sump pump outlet (way above the water line), and the bait well drain. I looked under the boat and can't see any holes there (unless it is covered by the trailer bunks...). So, where does it pick up the water? And is the valve in the bait well the only place to close it? I was hoping to plug it when I don't need it. Right now I try to schedule a freshwater trip after each saltwater outing and run the pump for a while to clear the salt from the system, but would prefer not to have to do that. The Triumph owner's manual does not mention anything about how to rinse the bait well system after a saltwater trip. Any suggestions?

I don't know what year you have. I have a 170CC 2004 model. It did not have a high speed pick up that year. I had to design one. The high speed pick up should be under the boat and look like a strainer, I would think. Wish I could help more. The valve in my baitwell is the only way to close mine also.

DCARLALUZ, I have a 170CC and the bait well intake is covered by a strainer. It is located on the upper right hand side of the transome about 3-4 inches up and to the right of the right side bilge drain, and above the right hand side center bunk of the trailer.

I hope that this helps. Bob

DCARLALUZ,

I have a 2006 170DC and I believe the high speed pickup is toward the front of the boat but is hidden by a bunk when on the trailer. I'm out of town for a while but will look when I get back to verify the location then let you know.

Tom

Bob, I thought that was the drain, not the intake, I noticed that when I fill the bait well with a hose that's where the water comes out. Will wait to hear from Tom and maybe put a mask on next time I am out...

Thanks to all!

Dieter

On the 07 model it is where deer hunter said. my issue is how to close it when i want to use it as dry storage. If I keep the plug in and start running all it does is overflow.

Just got back from a little trip. Had plugged the bait well drain on the transom but forgot to tightly close the screw valve in the bait well. Found some water in there when I got back. But, I swamped the engine well and it did not drain until I removed the plug I had put on the bait well drain. I also had a plug on the drain in the bait well itself, so I know water from the engine well did not flush back into the bait well... Next test will be with the screw valve closed real tight! I assume joeygumbo you had it closed, right?

I think we can always clamp a hose on the screw valve and run the other end down the drain... that should keep the place dry most of the times... unless you do a hard reverse...

I was wrong. The high speed pickup for the baitwell is in the back of the boat to the right of the centerline about 3" - 4 " from the transom. It should have a brass fitting around it. Sorry for the confusion.

baitwell

I have a 07, 170 cc, the intake for the baitwell is an the back of the transom. Right of center about 4 inches up. Because the baitwell pump adds air to the water the pump leaks water into the the boat. also the drain for the baitwell also dumps under the floor and runs back to the bilg pump to pump out just below the gas tank intake. My baitwell pump has a ballcock to shut of intake of water. If yours does not, then plug the transom intake when not using the livewell. Also I wanted to advise that the livewell pump leaks water even if it is not turned on. As soon as I get 20 hours on my boat i'll take it in for it's first service and ask about the livewell leakage.
ps baitwell = livewell

Dennis,
Your livewell pump should not leak water into your boat. That's something that should be fixed. My 2003 170CC has a seperate drain dedicated just for the livewell and it drains out the transom next to the intake. If your drain is dumping into your bilge then have that checked also. Sounds like maybe a couple of loose connections in your plumbing. Just some thoughts.
