Questions before buying a used 170?

I am looking at a 2002 with a 50 yammy on it. It has a trolling motor bracket, and bimini top, but nothing else in the way of accessories. They are asking 8K. the boat is clean and looks lightly used. Because I just moved onto lake Lanier north of Atlanta, I plan on keeping it in the water year round. Any opinions of price, power, or keeping the boat in the water all the time (I am really worried about blistering of traditional hulls)?

Thanks!

Hi Brett! I have a 170 CC with a 60 HP two stroke Yamaha. The price seems about right. I would double check to see if you can get the lifetime hull warrenty. The 17 does not have scuppers so a mooring cover and working bilge pump may be needed. The plastic hull does not blister and is easy to clean but my hull picks up surface stains which can be hard to remove. I don't know about 24-7 in a fresh water lake. Hopefully some one else can let you know what to expect under those conditions.

I am very happy with my Triumph and wish you luck with your purchase.

Bob

Brett,
I have a 2005 15' CC with a 50hp yammy on it. I can tell you that keeping it in a fresh water lake isn't too bad on the staining of the hull. I keep it in the water from April through October, pull it and bring it to the car wash to pressure wash, and it all comes off. Blistering is never a problem with a plastic hull.
I would however look for more comments on weather you have enough power on that boat. If I put 4 MEN (read: over 175lbs. each) in my boat, I have problems getting it on plane.
See what others have to say......and good luck

Brett,
I have a 170CC with a 60hp yam. 4 stroke. I would not want any less HP. If you plan on any watersports, sking, tubing, etc. you may be underpowered.

Two words...test drive! Take the boat for a run and see how it performs. Really put it through it's paces. Then you'll know if it has enough power for what you want. I wouldn't worry about keeping it in the water year around...I would make sure I had a backup bilge pump installed running from a seperate battery just in case you get a failure during a heavy rainstorm. A cover would also be a must have item to help shed the rain. Good luck with your search.

Brett3030, Just Wanted To Throw A Few Lines Out. Keep Looking! There Are A Few Good Used Triumphs Out There. I Bought Mine Two Years Ago As A Left Over. She's A 2002 170 "cool" (which Means It Has The Smaller Console) Like The Dc Or Bass Model. It Has Its Ups And Downs (90 Lbs Lighter Up Side/missing A Little Room For Storage Down Side) I Paid $9000 Out The Door With Taxes Included And Full Factory Warranties. Plus It Had Every Option Other Than A Front Fishing Seat.(which A Got Off The Great Ones Down At Merrit Marine) I Have The 50 Two Stoke On Mine. It Runs 34-36 On Gps. Also, I Think I Will Do Slightly Better With My New Prop. The 12 Pitch Was Running My Outboard At 6000-6100 Rpms. I Think This Might Be My Weekend Project. (have To Check The Honey Doooooo List First) You Need To Think About Where Your Going To Use It And Deside On The Outboard From There. I Use It In A Few Fresh Water Lakes Here In The Charlotte Nc. Area. So A 50 Is Great For Me And The Need For Speed Is Long Gone. Just To Be On The Water Is All I Need. And Away From Work!!! Did You Look At The Boat "jimdon" Is Selling In The Triumph Owners Classified I Looks Sweet, Tell You What I Will Sell You Mine At A Great Price And I Will Go Pick His Up If It Still For Sale. I Feel Very Stongly That I Will Always Have One Of These Plastic Jugs! (not Sure What Year Or Model) Let Me Know If Your Interested In Seeing Info Or Picture Of Mne.

Suchfun!

I bought a new 2002 170 bass with a 70 hp Suzuki 4 stroke. I paid $11,000 plus tax and license and dealer added accessories. I like the boat very much, but wish I had more hp. When I use the boat under 2000 feet, I use a 17 pitch prop and on smooth water get to 33 mph. On lakes over 5000 feet I use a 15 pitch prop and on smooth water get to 30 mph. The only problem is getting to plane. Most of the time at any elevation a passenger must step to the front of the boat for a few seconds to start the boat on plane. After that all is well. Definitely test drive the boat with all of your gear on board and at least a half tank of gas to make sure you have enough HP. Unfortunately, the max HP of the boat is 75.
