IMHO, it's always best to maximize horsepower, you never know when it will be needed, we use our little 170cc for offshore all the time, and if it's get's rough you can power up on the swells easily to get back in dry, you can change the puter and get 90HP out of a 75 yammie 4 stroke too, major speed
increase too. There is never enough power to weight ratio, I highly recommend the 4 stroke 75 Yamaha, can talk at WOT, the wind in your face is louder than the droning of the motor, and at trolling speeds just licks gas all day long. I have owned all the motors in the past, and I swear by the Yamaha stroker, and we have been in some really scary stuff 30 miles out off of Palm Beach, We are here to write about it partly on it's reliability. That's a Fact!!

Tom

I just bought a 2007 170 cc w/75hp yamaha 4 stroke. Dealer said stay away from e-teck. waited six weeks for 75hp. planes in three sec.cruise at 32 mph at 3800rpm, went to 5500rpm shortly at 45mph. Great combo. The 75hp gives you 25 amps insted of 15 amp chargeing. dual overhead cams insted of 60hp single cam. bigger block with better cooling.

why did he say to stay away from the etech, was he a yammy dealer, or just not informed on the etech? both are great motors, etech is 55lbs lighter and no service for 3 years or 300 hr

I have a 2006 170 DC with the Yamaha 60 HP 4 stroke. Sometimes had a hard time getting it on a plane if I had too much weight on the back. Installed a hydrofoil. No more problems! If money is not an issue go for the extra power. I saved around 1000 dollars going for the smaller engine and the hydrofoil and I am VERY happy with it.
