75HP 4S Yamaha too much weight for 170CC?

The motor weighs 369lbs. Too much weight for planing. Should I go with the 75 E-Tec instead? (314lbs.)

go to this site http://www.evinrude.com and watch the clip regarding bow rise with 4 strokes vs e-tecs. i think it will answer your question

on a personal note i bought an 01 logic 186 which is todays 190cc and had a 115 yami 4s on it. i could never get it to drain deck water due to the heaver 4s engine and trim was an issue as well. it i had a do over i would have used etecs on that one as well as the 01 210cc i currently own

dunno---maybe i have watched that 1/2 hour e-tec infomercial too many times on verses waiting for the next fishing program!!!!!

Hi Tom, I have a 170cc with a 75hp etech, I'm 280 and when i have 3 other people and full fuel I don't have a problem plaining. I'm very glad I went with the 75hp. Good luck with your choice, Bob

75 hp. 4-stroke too much weight?

Stated on past postings (too many times, I'm sure) that I have a 2002 170 CC with an 80 hp. 4-stroke Yam. This year the boat was rated at max 90 hp. Still have the 2002 sales brochure. This motor weighs 384 lbs. per owner's manual.

At rest in the water the boat sits a bit down by the stern with a bow mount 12 v. 55 lb. thrust Minnkota in place and full of fuel. Trim tabs were installed when boat was delivered new. Went through part of one season with tabs not operating due to dash switch failure. 100 percent covered by Bennett on warranty.

To the point, No trouble planning. No major bow rise if motor trim is used and this boat will jump up when tabs and motor trim are used together. My prop gives me 5,000 rpm at WOT. A Michigan SS wheel but I don't remember the specs. Range from manual is 5-6,000 rpm @ WOT. Typically 38 mph WOT on GPS. Really don't use all the horses very often. Cruise 28 mph @ 3,400 rpm.

I was told by 2 different dealers they would not put a Yamaha 75hp 4 stroke on a 17. They would be a 75hp E-tec on

I have a 75hp Yamaha 4s on my 2005 17' cc. It doesn't have a problem getting up on plane. It's plenty of horse power for that. My only complaint is low speed planing. The bow rides high at low speeds. This year I'm considering adding a fin or adding some weight to the forward fish boxes or center console. I'd appreciate any feed back regarding the idea of adding weight. Are there any potential draw backs. Obviously I'd start light and increase form there. The thought process behind this idea is that the boat rides better when my dog rides on the bow cushion. I've heard good things about the E-tecs. personally I'm more comfortable with the Yamaha since I've really enjoyed some of their other products.

When I bought mine in '04 my dealer said they found the best performance using a 2 stoke 60 hp motor. I did test drive one with a 75 hp on it and the difference to me seemed neglible so I went with the 60 because it was less money. I'm very pleased with my setup but that's not to say I wouldn't have been pleased with a 75 hp either.

I doubt very seriously that if you insisted on a four stroke 75 that either of those two dealers would turn down a sale just because they don't like them. As long as it is within the weight limits and horsepower rating on the boat they should have no problem putting on whatever engine you want. After all, you're paying for it.

I own an 07 170dc which is the same hull and weight as the cc. I have the 75 yamaha 4 stroke and it sits fine in the water. With full fuel tank it will run on gps at 47 mph and only me in boat. That is pretty fast for a little boat and feels very safe even at that speed. The only drawback that I find is that you need to make sure the trim is all the way down are you will get some bow rise. In my opinion I would not buy any motor that has that much different technology until it has been thoroughly field tested over a 5 year period by real owners and not someone looking to sale it. I felt the same way the first three years that they introduced four strokes. In saying that the 3 people I know that have them are satisfied so far with the etech. The only maintenance that they have needed is new spark plugs even though Evenrude says it needs no maintenance for 3 years. But which ever way you go you will be happy with the triumph.
