Bilge pump problems

My bilge pump sounds like it is running all the time, and the switch is lit all the time. I checked the pump and screen and it looks good.

My boat os a 17cc 2003 model.

Is there a float switch, i was told there was a timer, where would it be located.

Thanks in advance for any help
Roy

Roy,
I have the same year and model boat as you. Your bilge pump is on a timer and you should hear it cycle on and off about every minute or two if your switch is in the down position. If you flip it to the up position, your pump should run constantly. My switches do not have lights on them.

Thanks for the reply, i will test the pump today to be sure it pumps ok.

Then i will try to disconnect the timer. The switch was definately in the off positon and the lght stays on all the time.

Hopefully i can locate the timer.

Thnanks again
Roy

I know in my 191 it does not have a timer. The bait well pump has a timer but not the bilge. My bilge has a flot swith on the pump and a rocker switch on the dash. When my float switch activates the light on the rocker switch comes on. It sounds like your float switch is stuck on. Try to take the pump out and operate all moving parts to see if it is working.

If I am remembering right, this was discussed a couple yrs ago. It is an automatic thing with the bilge pumps on the 170's. it cycles on every couple minutes or more maybe. I belive some owners put a cut off switch in line to cut off the juice to the pump with on the trailer to keep from working on the batt.

Thanks for all the suggestions but i fixed the problem. The timer is built into the bilge pump it was running all the time. What i did was replace the pump with a new pump and installed a float switch. It was difficult working thru the small hatch ut it is done. Now the rocker switch or the float switch turn on the pump no more automatic operation.
