Primer bulb positioning

It seems like I have a lot of excess hose going from the tank to filter to primer bulb to motor. The hose from the filter to primer goes in front of the tank (out of sight), comes out by the battery and up towards the bulb before it exits to the motor. Can I shorten the hose and run it level across the top of the tank. This would have the bulb laying on top of the tank rather than next to the battery cables which makes me nervous. Is it OK to have the bulb laying on it's side? Does it need to be vertical or close to operate properly?

Thanks everyone!

I like to have my bulb out next to the engine so I can prime the fuel system without having to open any hatches. My pre-launch routine: put in plugs, remove tie-downs, remove transom saver, prime fuel system, back down ramp.

Just my 1/50th of a dollar.

Thanks guys,
I thought a good bulb should work in any position. Without cutting into the hose between the bulb and the quick connect, the bulb ends up inside, but easy enough to reach.

Cagrove, have you ever had trouble with the anti-siphon fitting on top of the gas tank? Marina thought it might be a problem when it starved for fuel during test ride but we had it running and no problems. It has died two times since getting it home, both during idling periods. Tried bypassing the filter but ended up with the hose shoved into the fill neck using the bulb as the gas cap to get home.

Was going to pull that anti-siphon fitting, but it looks really cramped for leverage under there. I'm taking a six-point deep well socket from work and will try that.

Any suggestions or experience is appreciated.

Thanks again, Bob

Knock on wood (knock, knock) my boat has been relatively trouble free. I've never had any problems with the fuel system. I've had a loose wire here and there but no real problems. Wish I could be of more help.
