How much thrust for 170CC? anyone have a riptide?

I'm looking to put a Minn Kota Riptide motor on my 2006 170 CC and am wondering what I should buy in terms of lbs of thrust to power the boat. Also I'd like to know if there is such a thing as a quick disconnect/mount for the motor so I can remove it when I want to cover the boat for storage. Thanks for any info.

I've got a 170 DC and a 42 lb Motor Guide Trolling Motor. Just spent several hours working my way around various coves in Navajo Lake, and was very satisfied with the motor's performance. I've got a 36 lb Minn Kota that I use on a 12 ft Port-a-Bote, and think it would be pretty short on "oomph" for moving my Triumph. My recommendation would be a minimum of 42 lbs, but preferably 55+. My Motor Guide has a quick-disconnect feature, and I'm sure there's a similar option for Minn-Kota.

The amount of thrust you need really depends on where you fish. Lakes with no current or little wind will require less than a river with fast currents or big water lakes with wind. I have a 71 lb thrust Motorguide on my 170CC and it seems to be a perfect match for the currents I encounter on the the Potomac River.

Most trolling motors can attach to a quick disconnect mount. FYI, I keep mine attached to the boat and cover the whole thing when I store it outside. Of course if you store your boat away from your residence then you would want to remove it.

I hope this helped.

I have the new wireless Minn Kota riptide on my 2007 170CC 55lb thrust. I have been out 3 times so far and have had a problem with it each time. The hand held remote and the foot control do not work well and lose contact and have to be reset. Then last time out after fishing for 15 minutes the whole thing died. Minn Kota asks you deal directly with them on these models and not to go through the dealer. I am no one my 4th call and full of frustration and will call my dealer to help me tomorrow. Good luck. I knew I should have stayed away from that technology.

I'm glad you wrote it with your experience. When you spend that kind of money it's sure aggravating to have problems right out of the gate. Maybe I'll expand my search now. I am looking for something that will be protected from salt corrosion as I plan to use it on the bay in calm weather for stripers. What shaft length did you get by the way. I have yet to find out what I need on my boat. I have the same as you only an '06. Thanks!

I have the exact same setup as you. Actually, I have been satisfied with the motor and amount of thrust. The wireless dongle isn't too great, however. I need an extra hand to operate the motor when I get a fish on the hook, so basically have gone back to the pedal system. Maybe I'm not coordinated enough to land a largemouth and keep the boat off the riprap at the same time

Trolling Motor

I have the Riptide saltwater with CoPilot. My second motor on my 17dc the first was not a saltwater series and I paid for that mistake. Triumphant was asking about shaft length. I got by with the 48 in. The 48" with 55 lb thrust does a good job for me in fast tides and winds. The only thing I don't really like is the little remote, when I hook up, so I'll have to get the remote foot control for it. Hope this helps I'm new at this and too old to change now. Greetings from Fl.
