Wear points on E-Z Loader trailer
Last November I had a total bearing failure on the E-Z Loader trailer for my 2002 170 bass. While I kept the bearing buddies full and checked for heat on the tires and hubs before launching, the failure occurred on the way home. Thankfully I caught the problem before the wheel came off of the axel. Because everything was cooked, it was impossible to determine the cause of the failure.
Becasue the spindle was damaged, I had to change out the axel and in so doing discovered that there are nylon bushings that hold the leaf springs to the frame. These bushings are inside the louped portion of the leaf springs at both ends. Inside the bushings are steel sleeves and the steel bolt which connects to the frame mount. Of the four nylon bushings, three had serious signs of wear and one had worn through the steel sleeve into the bolt. PLEASE CHECK YOUR NYLON BUSHINGS for signs of wear. To do so you will need to jack up the frame and remove the bolt and drop the spring down a couple of inches to slide out the bushings. If you need new bushings, you can order them from E-Z Loader at their web site. They are not very expensive, but there is a minimum shipping cost of $6 to $8. I ordered spares for the future. Since the E-Z Loader hub is "short" the axel and hub are unique to E-Z Loader. Therefore I replaced it with a more heavy duty (3500 vs 1500 lb)axel and hub assembly from a general supply house with a cost of a little over $100. If someone wants to buy my one good hub with bearings please e-mail me at rwfrey123@yahoo.com and we will see if we can work out a price. Troll |
