Transducer cable

I need to replace the transducer on my 170 CC as the other one quit working. Whats the best way to thread the new cable from the transom to the center console?

I'm having to replace it because the wrong one was installed. I thought the unit had gone bad so I sent it to Garmin only to find out unit was still good. Still did alright as they returned a new one in exchange for the old unit (go figure that one out). As it turns out the transducer I have was made for a lower powered unit. So after two seasons of use it couldn't take the higher power anymore and died a terrible death.

There should be a tube that runs from the CC to the rear of the boat...mine comes out right above the gas tank. It usually has a string already in it to help you with the running of the wires. Start at the back and route the wire up the transom and into the boot where the steering cables enter the boat. Thread it into the tube and pull it forward to the CC. Really very simple. Your other transducer may already be using the tube so just attach a string (mason cord works really well) to the old one and pull it out. Attach the new one and pull it back. Piece of cake. Let us know how you make out.

Finally got around to changing out the transducer. Only had a little problem with it, mainly I had to do it by myself. The cable on mine enters the transom area via the boot where all the controls come out. Due to the tightness of the boot I had to feed a few feet in, then go to the console and pull it through. Had to do this several times until I got it all the way through. Going to try it out tomorrow night or the next morning. After all the money I have spent, repair charge, new transducer, shipping, etc. I could have upgraded to a color unit for a $100 more. Oh well I'll put it on my Christmas list.

An easy method of running cables through your boat is to get a fish tape. Any electrical supply, hardware store, home depot or Lowe's will have them. This is a naroow metal tape on a spool that electricians use to "fish" wires through conduit. They work very well for wiring your boat too. I have pulled wires for two fish finders, and two on-board battery chargers with mine. It makes the job quick and easy, plus its just a good tool to have around the house.
