Electrical Gremlin heads up

As some know I work for at a Naval marina where we rent boats. We now have 8. Five are 170CC and three are 170 Bass. My post is not a criticism but a heads up to 170 owners and possible others, as I'm sure that the connectors I had trouble with are used in other models.

One of the dock attendants reported a bad bilge pump and no running lights. When I first looked in the console, I didn't see a connector so I thought it was hard wired. After scratching my head for a while, I stuck my head in further and saw a piece of a connector peeking from the hole in the floor where the cables and such exit. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that it was geen and one wire had rotted off. I proceeded to cut the plug off and hard wire the harness. After checking another boat I found that the connector on that one was also green and the bilge pump didn't work. So far I had rewired two but I will check the rest. Those that have the 170CC might want to check to see if the plug is in the bilge or tied high out of the bilge area. It drove me nuts for a while and I hope this helps others.

I was wondering (since I cannot remember on a 170) is that connection near any wet cell batteries that are venting that may be causing this issue?

As I said in my post, it was in the bilge in the console (under the livewell). It was partially hidden by the steering and control cables. Our boats may stay in the water for a few days and are used in saltwater.

The Strip-Ties were loose on the drain hoses under my dash drains (They just fell off) causing a similar problem for me. Had to replace the entire fuse bank and redoo the connections behind the switches. 05 210cc

Electrical Gremlins

My 2002 170 CC had no response on the stern light (Running & Anchor). After much searching, I found a failure in the single connection on the wiring harness jack for this light. Nothing green, all other circuits working.

I cut this single wire above and below the harness jack and put a jumper in to complete the circuit.

Also had a problem with the circuit breaker/ switch block caused by water leaking from my trim tab switches right on to this area on the CC. Bennett replaced the tab switch at no charge with a better, no leak model and I replaced my switches and circuit breakers with new. Dick @ Merritt was most helpful getting the right circuit breakers. The switches are available most anywhere elec. repair 'stuff' is sold.

If my boat sat in storage all the time, I would not have these problems. Fairly intense use when I do get her out and things happen.

Mudrunner, I received this word back from Triumph on this issue:
Quote:
2007 Model Year and later boats (all sizes) have new, sealed, Deutsch
connectors which should greatly reduce the chance of this happening in
the future.
You may want to contact your Triumph dealer about these new connectors.

Randy,
Thanks for the heads up. I'll speak the Seaport Marine about it.
