17cc to buy or not to buy?

These hull drainage issues you guys are talking about have almost changed my mind on a purchase of a 2004! I generally fish the chesapeake and Tangier sound(can get nasty quick) and am looking for a beachable hull. Are the deflection worries applicable to the 17cc?

tctighman, if you're looking for a perfect finish on a boat then maybe the Triumph line isn't for you. On the other hand if you're looking for a durable boat which should last a lifetime then you're on the right track. I went with Triumph for it's durability, warranty and style. I feel I'll keep my 170CC for a long time. Although it'd be nice to address the two foot itus I just want to be able to get on the water at my convienience. Given what I paid for the boat it can sit in the yard and when the notion to take a boat ride strikes I have the means. As far as appearance, find a dealer with several in stock and pick your hull. Some are better than others. At one time they were selling seconds that had imperfections in the finish but were still viable as a means of transportation. Make sure no one's trying to sell you one as a first. The 170s were one of the first hulls they made I think, as they added larger models I think there were some issues with "wavyness" in those hulls but at this point I think those issues have been resolved. You're at the right place for research. Ask away. Everbody here has come to terms with any issues you may have and for the most part justified them considering the other benefits of the boat. Good luck in your search. I know for me after weighing the options plastic was the way to go. As happy then as I am now.

17cc's have not had problem with water in the inner hull. It is not a self bailing hull, you will use the bildge pump when you take on water or take the two drain plugs out when your on the trailer. A blemished hull will have "BLEM" under the hull # on the transom. It means there is a cosmetic flaw on the hull.

Buy another boat!

I have a 17 that takes on water though the forward storage hatch drain holes. I pentrates the hull joint and saturates the foam core. Triumph dosen't think its a big deal. (Edited by NCangler)

Unlike Nashbrent, I have had no problems with my 170 CC. It does sit on a trailer and I even cut in an inner hull drain because I was concerned, but it proved to be unnecessary. If you want a boat to beach, your choices are plastic or aluminum. I chose plastic. Its not impervious and I have a few gouges to show, but I like it a lot better than the aluminum I had for 20 years prior to this. I would buy another (bigger), and planning on it unless I get cured of my bigger boat disease.

Nashbrent, something you might try is tightening the screws on the drain plugs of those boxes. When I first put my 170 in the water I noticed water in the boxes, tightened the screws and no more water problems.

if you use 3/4x1x1/8 o-rings in front of the red washers ,you will get a tighter seal. the red washers crack after a short time of exposure to boating conditions.

tct--how is you back ,legs, knees and neck?????. any logic boat will give a softer ride than a comparable glass boat.

as dick said, there have been very few intrusion issues on the 17 series boats. i wish there was some way we could get the video of an 01 210cc climbing up on a dock put on the site.. it convienced be as to the toughness of these boats and my first trip in some nasty chop sealed the deal as to the softness and dryness of their ride
