fishfinder

I have a 170cc is it ok to take power from main power cable in cc for fishfinder? Or run power strait to the battery.

You can take the power from any number of sources in the console area. My 170CC had an unused switch (Labeled "Accessory") that I wired mine in to. I later rewired my console to include a fuze block coming off of one of my trolling batteries and then ran the fishfinder to the fuze block. Good luck with yours.

Tight lines.

Power

I ran a separate power feed (positive and negative fused near the battery) through a wire run pipe (built in the 170, there is a pull string already in there, just add another string to pull it back for use again). I originally used 12 ga marine wire (tinned so copper doesn't corrode so fast) but noticed a voltage drop when using the VHF on high power. I rewired using 8 ga (perhaps too stout) and no more voltage drop.

Below is a link showing the fuse in the rear (near the battery) and the fuse block I installed in the center console.

Always remember that the larger the conductor the lower your voltage drop will be. RESISTANCE- - - -just like blowing through a straw (Large or small) with the same amount of force. Easier to do with the larger diameter straw. Electricity is the same way..... For the most part!

Found the BlueSeas covered fuse blocks work great and gives you one more level of fuse protection for expensive electronics. Have blown fuses in "open" style blocks when stored items shorted the exposed terminals in the cc.

A poly cutting board as a mounting base and electronics "wall" to further isolate wires and connections works good.

Think I ran 14g marine grade wire thru the T-top from cc to the second block in ebox. Sound right?
Connect with 16-20g from electronics 2-3' runs or what ever they came with keeping inline fuses too.

Overkill with fuses and covers but it's hard to do electrical work in 3+ seas and no one likes smoke coming out of the cc!
(makes you hope there are no gas fumes in there.....:O

If only I could post thumbnails, I'd show you but they are in my Members Gallery if interested.

Good luck, Molar
