Question Etec Information needed

HI, I am about to purchase a new 170cc,I had ordered it with a 60hp e-Tec.
My dealer has called back and said the 60hps will not be avail until much later this year or next.My options are 50hp or 75hp. The ???? is would a 50 push this boat well enough, with a couple of guys fishing or off for a sunday spin with friends .A little help please. I would prefer Etec over all. Thanks

well if the 75 fits take it...hate to be on the water only to find out you are under power.

I have the Honda 50hp on my 17cc and achieve 34 mph top speed as reported by gps. Thats plenty for me although the 60 would be even more ideal. The etec is lighter than my four stroke so if anything you should gain in speed.

I just bought a 170CC, I had the same debate, but decided to go with the 75HP E-TEC. From what I have been told, the 50 will work fine, up to maybe 28 MPH with one or two people. The boat will do 40 MPH with the 75HP.

My feeling is get the 75....the 50 will probably be ok but I think you'll soon wish you had the 75....especially if you are taking other people with you....I have a 70 Yamaha and I can do 39 with only myself in the boat.

Lightbulb

I like the design concept of the E-Tech (Porsche does excellent R&D work) and that engine more than likely saved the 2 Stroke Outboard from a slow CARB / EPA death.

I would though get a second opinion on your choices so feel free to call Heartland (link to web page below) and ask for either John or Kel and see what they have rigged and what they feel works best for that configuration.

Tight Lines!

Ive got the 70 yamaha on my 170 and it goes 42mph with me and one other. If your fishing shallow water you sure want as much power to get out of the hole as possible. Plus its a heck of a lot of fun to haul butt!

Camshaft

I went through the same debate last year. I ordered a 170DC with a 60hp E-Tec but it wasn't available. I went with the 50hp E-Tec over the 75hp and will get around 32 mph (speedometer) with just me and around 28 mph with myself and 3 other passengers. The only problem is a slow plane with the boat fully loaded and I have to distribute weight (move the heavyweights up in front of the consoles). If you want speed or plan to do a lot of skiing go with the 75hp but if you typically fish with 1-2 people the 50 should be fine. I would still go with the 60 if it was available and think it is the perfect motor for this boat and adds no xtra weight. For my purposes I think the 75 would add too much weight (80 xtra lbs) since I have to travel through some very shallow channels. I trim up the outboard and drop a Minn Kota Maxxum 55 bow mount and skim right though 12" of water with no problems. Great boat and motor you won't regret! Boy have I got some design suggestions for Triumph though!!!!

E-Tec

Go the biggest the boat will allow. I have a 60 HP Yamaha and I wish I would have gone with the max allowed. I am not happy with the speed on my boat. I fish out of the 170 Bass.
