Hydrofoil

My 04 Triumph, 60 HP Yamaha, is slow to get on plane and won't stay there below 20 mph despite using 15 pitch prop. Has anyone tried the 'hydrofoil' which claims to get on plane faster, stay at lower speeds, improve fuel efficiency? Results?

Thumbs up

I have 1998 17' with a 50hp merc that was doing the same thing and i put on a dolfin, lost about 1 or 2 mph on the top end but gained a lot of hole shot plane and better fuel mileage but it also get's some spray from the wings up into the boat,

I recomend them

I put one on my 210., I was haveing problems getting on plane, when fully loaded and 2 fat B--------- on board Hee heee e. So I put one on, and saw a good improvement...I also learned that i was not using my trim properly.
Make sure your trim is all that way down at take off and adjust as your conditions allow for. As for improved gas millage....I saw no diff, nor top end loss. I can still get 39 on a good calm day.

Lightbulb

I Had a Doel Fin on my past 210 that worked very well, but I have since switched and use this one that works much better and is stronger (less flex) and really killed that slow speed drifting form side to side that some hulls are prone to having.

The cost on this one is in the same price range as the plastic models, which makes it very attractive from a features and benefit stand point. Here is the BMS home page address so you can get pricing information.

Enjoy!

I just put a SE Sport on my 17CC, 70 HP Yamaha. I too lost 1-2 mph at the top but it does get right up on plane. The down side is you do have to pay attention to the engine trim because of porposing. Never experienced it before. The other thing is the trim position differes based on the passenger distribution. Still think its a net gain.

hydrofoil

Thanks for the replies. I have also done some research at other forums. Some love em. Others hate em. Cautions included 'warranty' invalidation. I checked Yamaha dealer and factory. Both said hydrofoil stabilizers did not invalidate warranties. Another caution was danger of cracking the cavitation plate to which the hydrofoil is mounted. I guess that is valid since it provides a wider wingspan to hit something. Bottom line is that my 60 hp Yammy needs a little help getting Mr. 17' Triumph up on plane and staying there at low speeds. I suspect that I could use my trim more effectively. But I'm going to give the hydrofoil stabilizer a try. I will post the outcome after I try it out.

I recently had the SE Sport 300 installed on my Yamaha 60 4-stroke. The 170cc does now get on plane a little quicker, but is still a little slow to plane when the boat is loaded with three or more people. I have also noticed the boat being more stable when running through choppy water. The boat doesn't "jump" every wake or chop you hit. I have not noticed any change in fuel milage. The overall affect has been positive for me.

Post Hydrofoil

I have a hydrofoil installed on my 191SC (with 130 hp Honda). It makes a lot of difference on the hole shot, but doesn't do much to prevent the porposing. I recommend this one:

I installed a "permatrim" hydrofoil on my 190 bay CC, 115 Yamaha.
Works great and is built from 1/4 alu. (stronger than doel-fin) and is powder coated to match the color of my Yamaha.
It was a great improvement at staying on plane at lower rpms.
