Question Slalom skiing behind 170DC

My wife and I are looking for a boat to do some slalom skiing behind, go cruising with some friends, take saltwater fishing on occasion, and not be a slave to it for maintenance. I had looked at the 170DC but thought the 75 HP limit wouldn't be enough for getting a slalom skier up (180-190lbs) with up to three others in the boat. My tow vehicle won't handle a larger boat and I really don't want a larger one either.

A dealer is telling me he can get up and ski behind a 60 HP 4stroke on a 170. He says we need to go with the Yamaha F75 for what we want to do.

Anyone out there care to comment? We really like the boat, size, layout, etc. Just want to make sure it'll pull us around the lake. We have a date for a test ski next Sat, but am interested in any owners longer term opinions.

Thanks,

h20family

Here are a couple of links from Yamaha showing the performance of the 170cc with the 60 and 75 motor. Note the time to plane for the 60.

Interesting links from Yamaha. Sure looks like the 75 is the better choice. I have a 170 with a 70 Yamaha 2S and you can certianly ski behind it, but I am not enough of a skier for slalom. I did put a Sport Fin (doel fin type device) on my boat. Got up on plane noticeably faster, but took a couple mph off the top end.

Many of those cavation plates create more drag than lift due to their design and sheer size than what is really needed to lift the stern of your light boat....

So try this one http://www.bobsmachine.com/Products/...stabilizer.cfm and you won't have the plastic flex nor loose as much top end speed due to lower wetted surface area.

Just remember you cannot have lift without drag so some top end loss "may" happen with any of them. Most times though the top end speed loss is from everybody still using as much engine trim as they did before the install, and one can really make matters worse "drag wise" if not careful... Try less trim since you already have the extra lift and you may regain your speed back

Enjoy!

Had 170 Logic wt 95 merc 2s. 13x21 stainless prop and SmarTabs. Top end=47mph @ 5500rpm. Hole shot = zero. The early Logic 170 cc were rated for 95 hp. No problem pulling anything I wanted to.

Thanks for the info, the performance sheets are a big help as I was looking at the weight difference between the F60 and F75 and wondering if the F75 extra weight was worth it. It looks like it definitely is.

I guess if we can ski behind the test boat with a 60, then the 75 will certainly do it. The big question may be if the 60 can't hack it, will the 75 be enough extra push to be acceptable. Guess I have to wait till Sat to find out.

BTW I tried to talk the dealer into a 90, especially seeing as the 75 and 90 weigh the same, but no way. He said the attorney's were involved and 90 was too much engine for most owners to handle. Bummer.

You could look for a used Logic and reengine. That way you could legitimately put that 90 hp on it.

I have found a 2001 Logic DC with a 70 hp Johnson 2 stroke on it. We are going down to look at it and test ride tomorrow. Anything I need to know about or look at specifically? The rig is supposed to have less than 100 hrs on it. Not sure if I can really tell or not as the engine cowl has been repainted. I don't want the two happiest days of my life to be the day I buy and sell this boat, so any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, the boat pulled us fine and ran well so we made an offer and now own a Logic 17' DC. I appreciate everyone's help. We are very happy with the boat so far, it seems to be exactly what we were looking for in a boat.

Great ski boat

I just got a 2001 Logic myself, with a 70 Johnson. I use a ski cable between both rear eyes. I also changed the prop for a better hole shot. 13X17 Now at 5500 I run about 38. This is a great boat and takes the waves very well.
