I also have a 170CC. I don't know where you will be fishing/cruising, but I live on the Southeast coast of North Carolina. I discussed them same concerns with other 170cc owners last year. I use my bimini top often in the late summer here. What I came up with is using a hand held (waterproof) VHF with a small bracket mounted on my console to hold it. I've never ventured more than 10 miles offshore (without a written promise from the "Big Man" upstairs that no squall would come up that day) I get good results and range with the handheld VHF and my cell phone to feel safe in the area's that I fish/cruise. Almost any size antenna is too big for me.I have a 12" AM/FM antenna for my stereo. I couldn't find anything shorter than 36" for a VHF. The beam of the 170cc is not quite as wide as I would prefer and I felt that I or someone would bump into or grab hold of an antenna in a choppy sea and break it off. You could mount it on the side of the boat with a rachet mount that folds down. You could also use the 36" antenna and mount it lower on your console, but I felt that a handheld would work as well as that. I bought the $99.00 special at Boater's World and I think the bracket to hold it came with it. I hope this info helps you. John D. |

I mounted my antenna on a rail mount near the top of the grab rail over the wind shield. I am pleased with the reception and it does not get in the way too much. It fits under my bimini nicely.
The antenna is a 4 ft job designed for installing on the mast of sail boats. I am planning to add to the foto collection on this site and can send you some pictures, just e-mail me back. Bob |
