Is a 75 hp 4-stroke too heavy for a 170?
I've had a couple of dealers tell me that the 75 hp 4-strokes are too heavy for the 170, and recommend I stay with a 60 hp due to the lower weight. I'd like the extra power of a 75, if the boat can handle it, but don't want to overload it.
Any experiences among the group? Thanks! Ru |

I have seen a 17 with a 75 4-stroke at the "dealer" or whatever they are where i bought my boat. I agree it looks too big for these boats but im not sure if they are too heavy or not. But just adding my opinion, which is like something else that everybody has.... I think the 17 looks weird with such a big motor.

Well, I got one of them weird lookin 170CC's with a Yamaha F75, and funny or not, it sure makes it move, quietly. It is within the weight limit for the transom, and leaves plenty of freeboard. I'll bet the dealer has a backstock of 60 & 70 two strokes... You may, or may not remember that this same hull had a rating for 90hp not too long ago, but I believe that most found that while within the weight limit, the boat tended to get away from folks, if they weren't paying attention. My 04 has a set of Bennett M80 trim tabs on it, at my request and it's makes the performance closer to a 18' hull, and it hops right up on plane, quickly.
See if you can get a test ride with a F75 pushing that hull, and I think you will agree that 43 mph never felt so good. |

I have a 2004 170 CC with a 4 stroke 75 HP Mercury. When I purchased the boat new, it came with a 75 HP Merc 2 stroke. Took it fishing in Minnesota...a 2 stroke was not for me. Traded for a new 75 HP 4 Stroke Mercury on way back from Minnesota in June, 04. Runs great, quiet, idles and pushes the 170 CC around 40 - 42 MPH. Yes, the engine first appears a little large (appearance wise) compared to the 2 stroke 75. The difference in perception (and of course, some physical) is that the lower unit from below the top cover of the engine is wider than the 2 stroke..which is where the size appearance is perceived.
I have no complaints regarding a 75 4 stroke on the 170.. Like the other poster, the 170 CC was earlier rated for up to 90 HP. I would not be concerned about it. I have been on some very rough water on large lakes in Arkansas and Oklahoma this past summer. No Concerns. GO FOR THE 75 4 STROKE in MHO. |

I have a 90 2 stroke Yammie on my 01 logic and it is way more motor than I need for just about everything. I have twice needed the power when fighting tides and wind in Beaufort Inlet and was glad that the reserve was there. I don't know the power differences between the 2 and 4 strokes but go for whatever the boat has max ratings for. Just my .02- Bob

My '04 Triumph 170cc is the first boat I've ever owned. When I was trying to decide on what size engine to put on it, I began thinking about what the boat would be mostly used for. I knew that I wanted a 4 stroke, I just needed to figure out what horsepower I wanted. I began looking at the horsepower/weight ratios. I chose the Yamaha 60hp 4-stroke for my boat. The reason was because the boat mostly sees shallow flats fishing and the 60hp 4-stroke is over 130lbs. lighter than the 75hp 4-stroke. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have the extra power that the 75 delivers, but the extra mph the 75 has over the 60 is not important enough for me to take on the extra weight.
