Should I pay MSRP for my boat

The Triumph site gives a "build a boat" cost analysis of a new boat. When contacting a dealer should I expect to pay MSRP for my new 190 or should I expect a discount if I am writing a check and paying cash? I notice that some dealers that have last year's model are selling the stock for as little as $18,000 while a new boat is somewhere in the area of $25,000. If the markup is that great, would it be too much to expect a discount of at least 10% for cash?

As another option, what about having a number of "extras" thrown in at MSRP such as VHF, bimini, Riptide trolling motor, Lowrance 339 sonar/GPS?

Note: I live on the west coast so the dealer has the additional costs of transportation.

Negotiate until the dealer won't budge any more on both cost and extras. If his bottom price is still too high, walk. Paying cash may make the transaction close quickly, but either way - the dealer is getting cash from you or the bank.

Jergofish-the Msrp Is The Wish Price For Big Ticket Items Like Boats, cars, truck Etc. If You Buy A Corvette Your Going To Pay Msrp Plus Because The Corvette Is A Specialty Vehicle That Not Many People Buy. Luhrs Or Hatteras Boats May Fall Into This Category. Honda Civics And Triumph Boats Do Not. If Your Boat Dealer Has Competion You Will Get A Fair Price On Your Boat. Cincinnati Was Right About The Cash Or Financing. It Makes No Difference. Actually, Sometimes If You Finance A Boat Or Car Through The Dealer Or Even Some Banks The Boat Dealer May Get A "kickback"

DON'T ever pay MRSP!!!

Jergofish, I just recently bought a brand new 215cc. Here's the steps I followed. Hopefully, you can follow a similar process and save yourself several thousand $$.

First of all, determine what size boat, options and motor you want. I started out looking at the 195cc, but ended up w/the 215cc after "kicking the tires" at the local dealer. I realized the extra cost was worth it based upon how I plan to use the boat. Then I determined a fair market value for my current boat. Next, I asked the members of this forum for dealer recommendations (see old post - "Dealer Recommendation"). Then I started making phone calls and sending emails. I found the cheapest boats down South (as much as 30% of MSRP). I also had several offers to buy an '05 model at a great price, especially with the re-designed '06 models out in the market. However, I liked the features of the '06 model and decided it was worth the extra cost.

With this knowledge, I started "working over" three local dealers. I sent their emails regarding price and trade-in value for my boat back and forth amongst them. They each moved off their orignal price quite quickly. The process reminded me of buying a new car, but I did it over the internet so it was relativley painless. Then I visited the dealer I felt most comfortable with and sigined a contract. The dealer is installing my GPS system as part of the deal, and I ended up going to the boat show w/complimentary tickets. I pick up my new boat in about one month.

I totally agree w/Cincinnati. An educated consumer is the dealers worst nightmare. Do your homework. Then spend the money you save outfitting your new boat. Good luck!!

If I had to do it all over again. Buy the "least" amount of "extras" up front and install them yourself or in the case of T-tops etc, custom units can be better and cheaper than factory.
Or, get the base, bare minimum boat, motor, trailer combo and see what discounts you can get from "extras" being added to the boat.
Lastly, buy boats in the winter prior to new models coming out.
Still, even if you pay MSRP, Triumphs are a good value but like all boats, will devalue like a rock!

Like a car, what you have should be sold seperate, if not you will loose on it.
use the net your best friend. Cash, finance , get your own, not the dealers, have it pre approved. Waving a large chunk of cash greensbacks around can be helpfull. (do not do this alone). Play one dealer against the other. what is REAL cost??? WHO knows dealer incentive , hold backs. spifs ect all make the dl.invoice worthless. Yes get those extras someplace else you will save.
